went for a hunt at my usual property at first light this morning, just wanting to have a few shots at bunnies to try and get my first trad critter.
i was walking along the side of one of the dirt roads where i usually see some bunnies, and stopped to watch a cat run off in front. i then heard a noise to my left up the hill and turned to see something black of medium size in the long grass moving around about 40 mtrs away with its head down feeding. i straight away thought it was just a wallaby, but then realised it was walking on all fours and didn't have a humped back or long tail. 'its a wombat' i decided, but then thought hang on a minute, its way bigger than any wombat ive ever seen, and it has long legs compared to a wombat, and moving faster than a wombat walks. i couldnt see its face or head in detail through the grass, just its basic body shape. 'it must be a pig' i thought. 'but im in victoria and not too far from melbourne?'. i figured id worry about that later and back track along the road and up the hill for a stalk and get to the bottom of the mystery. if it was a pig i wanted to drill it. i headed back about 50 mtrs and up the embankment so id be walking into the wind and stalked in to where i last saw it, but it wasn't there. i stood still trying to spot movement but whatever it was was gone. i told myself it cant be a pig and thought maybe it really was a wombat, so i spent the next half hour trying to find a hole or cleared pad but there was nothing.
im 99% sure what i saw was a pig, everything i saw tells me it was, but i never got a 100% clear positive id which is driving me crazy. it could explain the strange rubs ive seen there which i posted pics of a few months ago though :?
the owner said he's never seen pigs there, but he's also said he's never seen sambar, and ive seen a few of them about.

You weren't over at Mt Dissapointment were you?
I have heard tales lately of pigs and goats appearing there out of the blue (or Isuzu maybe :?: )
