View Full Version : Sambar activity
Hey! Are Sambas active all day, or do they rather sit under the bush all day and wait till dusk to come out? I've never seen them wandering around when stalking, only standing, lying or running off. Don't they need to feed or water during day (eg. late morning, afternoon)? What are your experience guys :?:
Mate Sambar will get up from their daytime bed early to mid afternoon and have a bit of a feed and mabey a drink then hop back down to rest.

G'Day Welly.
Sambar will do whatever THEY want during the day. It really depends on the day, if its 40 degrees they are like us, they will be in a cool area or wallow, if its 4 degrees and peeing down rain they will be tucked up under a shelf or stand of tree ferns to keep warm, if its 18 degrees and sunny, you could find the buggers anywhere.
A quick question for you Welly, the ones you saw standing still whilst stalking, how did they get there and or was it standing there all day?
If you take the time to sit and listen for around half an hour, you WILL hear the critters, they are a big animal and if they don't know you are there they don't try to be quiet.

Thanks for your time guys! Uhmm, they might have got up from their bedding area hearing me coming? I can't stand still whilst stalking for more than a imaginary cigarette length mate. Sitting there for half an hour gives me needles in my legs. BUT! You are absolutely right! Cheers

went out this afternoon and got to 30m from a beautiful 26'to 28' Stag in velvert only to realise I left the camera in the car.
I sat and watched him for about 15 min as he was feeding but he busted me sending text messages.
He was out feeding in the grass on the edge of the timber country at 8.33pm

so piggy ,did u take ur bow?? did u not shoot him as he was in velvet?? or u prefer to take photos..just curious..ive never hunted sambar, hope to one day...cheers pat :D
I went out with a mate and as we all need meat he talked me into taking the rifle. I said to him I know i will regret it.
I won't shoot any stags with the rifle so I just sat there and watched him with my 30/06 in my hand.
I know this stag and last year his antlers were nearing the 30" mark so hopefully we will meet again soon.
