i know it depends on the weather but what is the rough time it starts? Also are the deer around burumba dam Reds? I remember going fishing there when i was about 10 and seeing deer all over the banks when we were using the spotlight to find the pots and would like to try and get some good wild deer pics.....i think it is national park so maybe they won't be as spooky?

Fallow and Reds come into rut about the first cold nights of late March or early April.

we dont have cold nights in late march early april ,the roar depends on the area but last 2 weeks in march and 1st 2 weeks in april its a funny thing. bacon send me a pm and i will fill you in on boroumba
I have no idea, but maybe it has to do with the lunar cycle as it always seems to be around easter:?:
It does ramp up with a little cold weather but you will normaly hear a roar by the 20th or so of March and it gets harder and faster from there in , but like everything in nature it works to its own clock and they can go on and off the boil , best thing is to be in the bush every day for two months LOL  JUST TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT MISS IT !
I tried line that with my wife :( I hope you have better luck)
Its been a great season for antler growth so there should be some good heads come out this year for the trophy hunters.
The Deer around the lake sure are Reds , you may even see the odd Rusa there now as well one side is private land and the other is leased I am fairly sure.
Good luck in the Roar

I agree with Steely
I book 2 months worth of free time to the rut, you just can't pick from year to year when it is going to start, so better safe than sorry
Are you going to chase them this year Jindy ?
I have a super spot this year and I am really looking forward to the roar , the land owner is going to call me when they start going off so I dont spend to much time waiting and burning up leave which is great of him to do , he has stopped all the Rifle hunters on his place two years ago and the numbers have really pumped up so fingers crossed mate it may turn into an Antler fest ! I just got my new Hoyt Trykon and she is a sweet shooter , but I am taking my Recurve with Carbons this year just to amp things up a bit and make more of a challenge out of it because I have found that I can get inside 30 on the Reds a bit easier than these bloody Chital that pick me up at 750m
Good luck if you are after them it should be a great year
Simon
Steely could you ring me when he calls you, if you remember. it would be good to get the jump on this.

I am certainly going to have a go Steely. I am not into trophies and last year was the first year I even thought of taking a buck, but I have this urge to pit myself against a particular animal.
I chase fallow and I have a guy picked out already. it is exciting knowing the animals and making a real challenge out of it. Mozza is joining me for the opening hunt so we can hopefully get some vid and pics :D , we are both quite excited about the prospect of me nailing the "big grey guy".
There are a lot of reds on the place too and they seem to go off about the week after the fallow have their big spurt, so I am going to have a serious look this year. I don't know how I will go on the reds, I have limited knowledge on their habits and the terrain where they are favours the deer in a big way.
The feed has been great up there since the middle of Nov' and I expect the deer are as fat as mud. I hope to get the BGG early on (really I will be happy to get him at all  ) it would be good to get him before he runs himself down in the excitment, I want to get to eat him as well as score a rack.

Do you chase deer with the bow much Jindy? Or mainly fill your freezer with the rifle?

Last year was the first time I took my bow out after them
I have always looked at them as stock more or less, just meat on the hoof.
The BGG really got my blood running last year and something inside me said I just had to have a go.
It was like being a little kid all over again

imo there is nothing like hunting a deer esp for me a stag..any stag any species..evryone of them gets me more excited tha n i can describe, and when u finally do succeed in taking one again the emotions that run through u are undescribable..this year will be my first time on a chital, i know i am going to have a blast..i always take as much meat as i can out afterwards as well..good luck to everyone this year on the deer,im sure it will be a good year...cheers pat :D

I hear stalking a doe is harder than a stag? Do the stags get a bit stupider thinking about fighting and the other? When i got in close to those billies my first thought (after thinking i have to nail one) was about deer. Never had an interest until i knew by experience what the stlk was all about. But woud love to chase them one day.

Most of the year you don't see the bucks much. They are pretty secretive and they are probably harder to get than does when there is no rut.
But in the lead up to the rut the bucks seem to get out more, they have to get a good feed on so they can make it through the efforts of the rut and they are seen by hunters a bit more often.
During the rut they are as thick as two house bricks and I have to say, anybody who hunts them in full rut with their rifle and then prances around telling the world they are the worlds best hunter are having themselves on. There are bucks where I hunt that are so keen to get their end away that they will run over to you to check out what you are if you hide in the tea tree and give it a rattle. The older bucks are a bit more cautious and won’t often run to you, but they will often still not run away if you are not visible because they think there might be a chance that you are something they can mount.
At the end of the rut they take a little finding, but you have a good 6 weeks to get one while they are concentrating on putting back condition they lost during the rut and getting a good start on winter. This time is commonly called the silly season.
All this relates to fallow. I have seen it a bit in the reds too, but I haven’t spent much time on them so I can’t say if it is just the same.

You wan't a challenge?
Try getting to bow range of the old matriach in a herd of Deer.
Bucks are quite easy during the rut, but the matriarch is hard to get to all year.
I have tried a few times just to try my luck but she is one very wary animal.

Is the matriach like "the man". Oldest bloke or something? Hey does anyone else know the painting "monarch of the glen" ? by Landseer? Sir edwin i believe. Its a beaut

You bet Warlocke
I have some pics of the deer out in the paddock feeding and the old girl and the buck are always right in the middle of the herd and in the middle of the paddock. Your chances of getting them in that setting are almost zero.
I don't think it is learned behaviour, instead I think that the deer that naturally tends to shield it's self behind the others just gets to be a ripe old age, but who knows??
You often see the same thing in goats too
I'm sure the big grey guy will be yours jindy, I don't doubt it for a minute.
Just hope i'm with you when you take him :)
I can't wait for the season to start 8)
