HUNTERS ANATOMY OF A FERAL HOG
HEART - LUNG - SPINAL CORD
The heart, lung, and spinal cord anatomy of the feral hog is widely misunderstood.
This article deals with the anatomy of the wild boar. GRAPHIC PHOTOS are used to illustrate the location of the heart, lungs, and spinal cord so hunters can better understand the KILL ZONE.

It is widely understood that a wild boar is "hard to kill". Amazing campfire stories of how well placed shots on the beast fail to bring them down. It's not that the animals are so tough, rather, the kill zone is so small!

I have seen artistic drawings of HOG ANATOMY and not once have they been correct. At best they were terribly misleading.

The photos below will reveal in GRAPHIC DETAIL, the exact location of the VITALS and will illustrate how small the heart/lung cavity actually is. Also it will illustrate the location of the spine which runs MUCH LOWER through the shoulder section than many hunters may realize!
I also want to point out how far forward the PUANCH or the STOMACH and INTESTINES actually are located. TAKE A CLOSE look at the final photo! You can see the Paunch is all the way up into the lower shoulder and actually rests against the heart. So the popular belief of placing a shot "BEHIND THE SHOULDER" will do nothing but rupture intestines and liver. This shot will leave a wounded hog running for hundreds of yards. The blood trail will usually end at around 100 yards when the blood coagulates and plugs up. Although the hog will die, they are rarely recovered.

PHOTO OF THE SKINNED HOG WITH THE FRONT LEG PUSHED FORWARD!
http://aussiebowhunter.com/images/piganatomy/frontleg.jpg

THIS PHOTO REVEALS THE RIB CAGE AND THE FRONT LEG MOVED FORWARD. THE SHOULDER PLATE IS ERECT AND NOT SLANTED AS MANY ARTISITIC PHOTOS MAY DEPICT IT. tHE SHOULDER PLATE COMPLETELY COVERS THE HEART AND LUNGS WHEN IT IS IN THE PROPER POSITION.
http://aussiebowhunter.com/images/piganatomy/ribcage.jpg

THIS PHOTO ILLUSTRATES THE EXAXT PLACEMENT OF THE HEART AND LUNGS AS WELL AS DEPICTING THW LOW DIP IN THE SPINAL COLUMN.
http://aussiebowhunter.com/images/piganatomy/hartlung.jpg

AS YOU CAN SEE THE CAVITY AREA IS ONLY SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE HAND OF MY 13 YR OLD SON, WHO SHOT THE HOG. THE LARGE ARTERIES FROM THE LUGS AND HEART ARE SEEN PLAINLY IN THE PHOTO. THE LUNGS WERE ONLY SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE HEART ITSELF.
http://aussiebowhunter.com/images/piganatomy/harthand.jpg

THE SMALL HEART LUNG CAVITY REVEALED. ALSO ILLUSTRTED IS THE PAUNCH AREA INTRUDING RIGHT INTO UP TO THE SHOULDER AREA. THE DEFINING LINE OF THE PAUNCH, ON A LIVE HOG, IS THE INSIDE CURVE OF THE SHOULDER MUSCLE! SO PLACING A SHOT OFF THE SHOULDER INTO THE RIB CAGE WILL NOT HIT THE HEART LUNG AREA! SHOTS MUST BE PLACED INTO THE MID SHOULDER OR NECK.

Good stuff, very helpful indeed, Tackleberry did a fantastic job with his too.
I saw this on an American Traditional Bowhunting website called Trad Gang where they are disscussing Hog hunting. Some very experianced Pig hunters are sharing their knowledge and giving tips on feral pigs behaviour and how to hunt them effectivley and there is some really good information for beginers and experts alike.

I would love to see some of our more experianced Aussie pig hunters doing the same here....on a new thread perhaps...nudge, nudge, wink, wink. :D
Some of you have a wealth of knowledge on the subject and I know i'd benifit from it.

If you wanted a heart shot it would be, other that that aim higher to take out the lungs.

Yep, I wouldn’t go higher that 5 inches, but 3 to 5 would be on the money, just have to watch the angle forward too, but from that pic it is probably the most effective bow hunting shots, defiantly one of the most common.

yep, quatering away is the nicest shot in my eyes because of how forward the hogs vitals are in the chest, i have also been told that with a heart shot an animal will run further than with a lung shot something to do with adrenaline???? when i asked the station owner up north if i was able to take a scrub bull he told me that lung shots are safer than heart shots because the scrubba won't run as far?????not sure bout' it though :?

it all depends,,ive two heart shots on deer one a red last year and a rusa year before, both were lucky if the took 10 steps,on lungs it also depends if high or low..also depends on the state of the animal when u shoot,is he nervous, calm etc...
i personally aim for heart shots,a lot of game will drop if they hear ya,so ull take top of heart or worse case lungs, also if u hit lower lungs they will bleed out more... just my thoughts..works for me....cheers pat :D

That’s right I find heart shot put the animals down a little quicker but in most cases, but never longer that the normal time frame compared to double lungs shots. I have heart shot scrub bull (have it on video) and heart shot many pigs and deer, but I always aim for double lungs and if I hit a bit low and get the heart shot then that just fine, but I normally don’t deliberately aim for the heart unless like Aussie said there are likely to jump the string.
