Not that many of you guys are form Sydney but it's the deadliest of the funnel web species.

And another tip - you have on average 40minutes from bite untill time of death with a funnel web. So...don't panic but don't dawdle.

Also a funnel web only has one muscle in its legs and thus can't jump (you need 2 muscles) so when it is rearing...it's strike zone is ONLY right infront of the spider....about an inch...you are 'potentially' safe outside this zone.

(From the Pufferfish text) If in doubt as to whether a fish is safe to eat, first offer a small portion to a cat to determine if the fish is edible... but remember to try someone else's cat

I think this is very sage advice.... but where would you find the cat out at sea?

Rabz

P.S. Was the info taken from Carl Edmunds book?

Not my bloody cat !!!

I'm currently nursing a white tailed spider bite on my calf. I got bitten last saturday night (9 days ago) and still have a nasty bite mark about the size of a 20cent piece. Some tissue damage and im closley monitoring it for necrosis. I have taken quite a few pics but this pc wont upload my photos. When i can, i will show you blokes .... its not a nice feeling though, waiting for your leg to start to rot

Anyone else been bitten by one of these buggers?

Cheers, Cam

Not me but been finding a few in my unit (where i live not my UNIT  ) apparently comming from upstairs. I've seen the damage it does, our little helper elf as i call him (4 foot maintanance man) was bitten, almost a year ago and is still feeling the effects. Thats the prblem with these buggers its not get to hospital or you'll die, and if you make it you're safe, the effects of the bite carry on for months and in some cases years after the actual bite. Known to result is loss of fingers, toes and in more severe bites limbs

I knew a girl who was bitten on the cheek by one cam (on her pillow) and didn't have much effect at all on her, it only got red and swelled up for a couple of days and then dissapeared.
I hope that that is all that happens with you mate, cause ive seen some pics that don't look to good of others
all the best mate :)

that sucks cam - hope the little bastard didnt get too much venom into you. all the best for a speedy, and permanent recovery mate.

ps- from what little i've read about the white tails, the effects seem to be somewhat random from victim to victim. sincerely hope you're one of the luckier ones mate.

Hey cam i got bitten on the neck by one a while back and it only caused a raised painful lump like a mozzie bite and was gone in a day. Hope yours doesnt cause you too much trouble. I have also been bitten on my ear twice by a large redback who was hideing in my motorbike helmet and that had no effect besides a sore ear..

Thanx for the support lads,
I have been doing my research and in one particualr survey with 130 confirmed white tail bites not even 1 ended up with necrosis ...

Its been well over a week now and its still a pretty nasty sight ... the doctor gave me some steroid cream to put on each night but its seems to be a slow healing process ... been crook all week and a dull head-ache but i hope im over the worst of it...

I wonder if this steroid cream helps muscles grow???? i know where i'll be applying the left-overs ;) ...

You gotta laugh even when things aren't the best.

Thanx again fellas

Cheers, Cam

Hope ya ok Cam. I've never been bitten but my house has produced the biggest whitetails I've ever seen. I kept one in a jar for ages. It was about 4 1/2 cm long. The other day I got another one about 4cm long. They were both in my bedroom. Pretty scary. Have decided to bomb my house  Insect bomb that is. Hopefully if there is a nest in there they'll all be no more.

Yeah not good Cam, I would be keeping an eye on it also, what did the doc have to say?

Is there anything you can do or take to help it heal correctly, it does not turn bad?

Bowmancam

The doc gave me some steroid cream to rub on and it seems to be working quite well, though it's a slow process. I think i'll keep my leg. ;)

I just have to say what a great bunch of people we have on this site. It's been said before but i truely appreciate everybodies well-wishes.. Some folks get upset with a post or two here and there, but when a bloke is down on his luck it's great to know he's not alone and he has "mates" (and "girl-mates" Jo ) who take the time to pass on there best wishes.

Thank you all sincerly for your thoughts and well wishes.

Cheers, Cam

yep - i agree cam - one of the strong points of this site IMO.

just be careful with that steroid cream, and save some for your leg (the one that got bitten).

Go for a scuba dive Cam, you will see what oxygen therapy can do for wounds like that. And it is much cheaper than the hyperbaric chamber :D

I hope it get better soon

hey cam..my wife was biten by a whitetail about 3 years ago on her finger.thankfully it didnt start to rot or anything like some of those horrific pics on the web but it does come back about once every 5 months or so.It just sort of festers up abit like when she was first biten then goes away. The doc gave her some cream to put on when it shows up and says it will probly do it her whole life.Hope it clears up for you.

Hope you get well soon cam. The thing to remember is everyone reacts in different ways to bites from spiders, i was bitten on the foot by a redback and felt the affects for nearly two months after. The first week was very harrowing and thought at numerous times i was either having a heart attack or a stroke where as Mackadelegend pointed out he only got a sore ear. If i had rung poisons information center i would have got the correct antivenom but i went to my local quack and he just told me to ride it out. The second time i was bitten on the hand & knew what to do straight away. So dont wait, get good advise as soon as you think you have been bitten.
