i noticed a few people were having concerns practicing in there back yard. i was a bit too and thought of this after seeing byron ferguson shoot.
its only a quick knock together but soon ill make a frame hidden in behind the hedge to make a much bigger back stop. i was using judos, but after taking out a dozen divits, ill use the rubber blunts. i used margarine container lids wrapped in tape as targets, but will come up with something more durable. the rug is one of the heavy type that furniture removalists use and stops the arrows dead.

Interesting setup, ill be looking at making a target and backing for practising on soon, i setup one today using bails of sugarcane mulch.. got a cheap bow today to have a bit of a play with.. seems to shoot straight, nailed the target clean... but the arrow passed through the bails of mulch and went through a 1.5" thick wood fence pailing... luckily theres nothing but tree's behind my house .. im thinking about a frame with layers of carpet.. to help absorb the arrows force...

Try alternate layers carpet & underlay out layed flat, sandwiched between two sheets of masonite then screwed together.

Works for me !

Does the Masonite do any damage to the arrows?

For ages I used a couple of woolpac's with heaps of plastic wrapping like off of timber packs and pallets of stock .I just took a empty bag to a transport company and they phoned me back in about a week coz it was full. I then painted a different style target on each of the 6 faces and it lasted about 2 years .I only got rid of it coz I moved to vic.

The masonite doesn't damage the arrows. It's only thin but the two sheets work to grab the arrow with it only passing a few inches out the other side.

Cheers for the info, im thinking about the masonite idea... maybe Masonite, carpet, sheet of canite, carpet then masonite again.. . should stop most arrows hopefully
