View Full Version : Fallow Rut
Went for a look see on the weekend, seen a few does though neither bucks nor any recent activity, the buggers are like ghosts pre and post rut.
The rut can't be far away now.
I did find a cast, even though it had a broken tray and missing guard tine I was still a happy camper :D
So how«ÉŸs everyone else fairing?
much the same ds, we have found groups of fallow and red does and have found a few rub trees around the place but we havn't seen any bucks or stags yet

well i havnt seen nutin in the way of deer
.
LOL
Afew of the guys back home are saying its gunna happen late this year. I hear the reds will start roaring around 3rd of april.??
You can usually count on the reds roaring inthe first week of April, but it all depends on the hinds coming into season. I haven't had a chance to get out to have a look at all this year...Glenn...
Hey!
They haven«ÉŸt started down here yet but cannot be to far off just need a cold snap to set them off I reckon.
But I«ÉŸve had some Pre rut success anyway so I«ÉŸm happy!
See ya Pete.

I was just chatting to the owner of a place where I shoot fallows and he tells me the fallow are into it already a week or more and he has heard a few reds over the last few nights.

Matt
He was glad I rang, he is already having poacher problems and an extra set of eyes on the place is just what he needed. I don't know what days I will be going yet , it depends on if a mate is coming along or not.
I will be in touch and let you know how it goes.

As far as i've heard, all is quiet around here - though was speaking to a mate from Albury and he said he heard 4 fallow stags going off on saturday and a couple of fights
I rekon a cold snap could be the difference

But I«ÉŸve had some Pre rut success anyway so I«ÉŸm happy!

Was hoping any1 could tell me if the Fallow have started 'croaking' aound the braidwood area. This will be my first ever deer hunt and have never heard a fallow before. A guy at the 'shot show' described the sound like a big frog. Is this right?
Cheers, Cam
Bowman,
I hunt the fallow round tarago and from all reports they wernt making any noise last weekend (12, 13th) though last year they were going by the 20th, and with this cold whether down here i rekon they should be going now if not by the weekend.
Maxy
PS. Scull a can of coke and then burp it out in about two or three real load burps - thats what the fallow sound like!!
A guy at the 'shot show' described the sound like a big frog. Is this right?
That's a good way of describing it, better still a frog on steroids :D
Cant speak for Braidwood though they have not fully began in my end of the paddock (Vic). I did finally find a buck yesterday that just started sign posting, though I did not get a look or hear him.
What has been your success rate on sitting and waiting for these wily critters to approach, ie on scrapes.(the country i hunt does not lend itself to stalking ) or do you al lmainly still hunt?
Here's some fresh activity from the weekendhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/dstoj1/Resizeof2005_0321Image0045.jpg

Thanx guys im starting to get the idea what they sound like, i dont have any coke so i just sculled a beer for the burp test and punched out a couple of crackers (all in the name of research   ) i hope i dont just end up finding my mates back at camp.
ds makes a good point, i normaly always stalk rather than camp up and wait, but i understand that deer are pretty damn observant to movement so i guess a change of plan could be in order.
Any tips?
Cheers, Cam
I've had a few bucks during the rut run towards me while calling them in with big burps. I take a couple of cans of pepsi out for calling them in.
As for waiting for fallow it s alot easier to get close but I prefer spot and stalk. Spose it depends on numbers and landscape.

too true coach, ive tried to cram so much into my little brain that ive got bowhunting bits n pieces falling out of my ears
I think i'll try spot n stalk on the deer, then on the last day im gonna take an esky full of carlton cold into the back country and burp me up a herd
Thanx for the tips guys ;)
Cheers Cam
How about rattling, anyone have any luck banging antlers?
ds
Spooked a good buck doing it ds and never tryed again. Probly does work just need to find an agressive buck.
I have never hunted fallow from a blind/ tree stand - all my hunting has been still hunting and stalking. Having said that the fallow where i hunt seem to move around a fair bit and be pretty sporadic where they rub etc.
As for rattling antlers - tried it once with negative rtesults and have never treid since
Maxy
Hey!
That«ÉŸs the best way to describe it Maxy!! When they grunt trust me you won«ÉŸt miss it.
I have only herd one buck grunt just after dark on Thus the 24th but there still not at it.
There defiantly taken there time this year down my way
See ya Pete.
I'm hoping to get out in a couple of weeks to try and find tha fallow on my property, so will let you's know how aI go then.
Hood 8)
They have just started down our way!!!
The deer have gone real quiet in our area, scrapes have not been touched, struggled to make a sighting. They have either retreated into the (thick)bush or gone elsewhere :( Calm before the storm one would hope.
What are general deer numbers like in your neck of the woods?
The reds i have been watching in vic started rubbing 3 weeks ago and the last time i saw the stag 2 weeks ago he was in hard antler with heaps of rubs and trees totally thrashed
Well in NZ they were hard to find and we never saw one but we did hear a couple running off, it was very dry and hot at the time so that may have a bit to do with it, and may be the same story over here but who knows.

Mozza and I went for a quick hunt before work this morning. Saw 10 fallow does and 7 red hinds between us. Didn't see any bucks, but did have one responding to my coke burps 3 times. Mozza saw a nice buck at our spot yesterday but couldn't get a clean shot!
i went out again tonight and saw a red spiker :) pretty happy about that seeing as we have only seen does in the area before, also burped in a buck yesterday but couldnt get a clear shot :x although i saw him again this arvo and got some good video of him making a scrape
sorry, i also sat out in the dark tonight and listened to the fallow croaking all around the valley :D :D HOW GOODS AUSTRALIA
Hey!
Yeah the bucks have been grunting for a week at my place, took another buck yesterday arvo, seen a pretty good fella so I«ÉŸll keep working on him.
See ya Pete.
Down here in SA the stags are grunting and have been for about a week. Herd it for the first time on the weekend. What an experience!
Macka
Man I have to wait for two weeks before I can get onto them. Work and all
have to ring the property owners and find out what they have seen or heard of late.
Hood 8)
How long do the bucks croak for in your neck of the woods ie. one or two weeks?. Can you expect isolated animals to be vocal when the majority have ceased?
We got less than one week out of our beasts.
ds
Hey!
Yeah I had only 2 weeks max of the bucks grunting down my way, I guess the weather does pay a part and we did have a heat wave come though this year and I«ÉŸm sure it all depends on the when buck have reached there peak too some animals would peak at different time's as well as local hunting pressure is a factor.
See ya Pete.
I see heaps of Fallow all the time at the state forest i hunt in, but not allowed to shoot them . Can only shoot Fellow on private property with permission.
Never heard them croak or roar only a loud bark when they bust me.
I saw a buck the other day that looked like it had a big ball of bale twine wraped around its antlers or head, or could it have been the top part of larger broken antlers . (It was just on dark)
How do deer cast? Do the antlers fall off clean or do they hang on and flop around for a bit?
jamie.

They break off clean. And once one breaks off they will bash the other around a bit to get it off too, as the uneven weight upsets their balance
What you may have seen is where the deer are making a scrape in the longer grass the grass gets caught up in the antlers. You don't see it often in fallow but quite a bit in reds.
