Who shoots with one eye closed and why :?:

This came up in a discussion last night and I said even though I use a peep sight I shoot with both eyes open.
Back in the days when I got my first bow and I shot fingers with no sights I shot with both eyes open, I believe you can judge distance better with your eyes open.

I have never sighted along an arrow for accuracy, I have always concentrated on the target and let my subconcious aim the bow. This also worked for me shooting field and game for many years as you could judge a clay target better with your eyes open.

Your thoughts, Dave.

I shoot one eye closed when shooting the compound with peep and both eyes open when shooting my recurve

Instinctive shooting = both eyes open (like throwing a tennis ball).

Sights = left eye closed...being I'm right handed and left eye dominant...this cross up would have my arrows constantly missing if I didn't "override" or "cancel out" the input from my left eye by closing it.

Have tried the two eyes open thing with sights...she no worky for me  Wish it did as it is IMO far better for depth perception...of course.

I'm cross dominant the same way as Luke, but i keep both eyes open.
I just kinda trained myself which sight picture to aim up on.
I suppose i did it by closing my left eye, aiming, then opening the eye and concenrating on the sight, as it was when the left eye was shut.

Even with sights, i still try to look at the animal, not the sight.

I did shoot with one eye open with sights and peep,I then trained myself to shoot with both open made aheap of difference for the better mind you it did take a while as i would do this weird cross eyed thing.

Both eyes open when shooting non sighted gear, one eye closed when using a peep and sight, I know the distance when shooting with sights (have a single adjustable pin) so I really don't need the depth perception.

Like others I am Left eye dominant & shoot right handed. I have done about 30 years of competive rifle shooting & I have always shot rifle peeps with both eyes open but with a light coloured blind in from of my left eye.

I shoot compound with the left eye closed, However I would like to shoot with a blind. Does anyone have any ideas on how to mount one?
Off a Hat?
Off glasses?

I used to shoot clay targets against a bloke who would put a piece of sticky tape over one side of his glasses to give it a hazy look, I suspect that was his dominant eye and it would try and take over.

I thouht that I was the only wierd one out there left eye dom and right handed. but it looks like I have family every where. I knew I was mixed up from early on when dad told me I was shooting my shang eye wrong. when I got my frist air rifle dad said I just have to learn to shoot with my right eye. so I think I've got it good I use too drive, spot and shoot rabbits easy cause of me left eye dom thing. only gets hard at dawn and dusk with the bow when the left eye feeds the brain a stronger signal then the right eye shooting bare bow.

Both open. I only shoot instinctively. I have been canting the bow a lot more recently and this seems to help, as both eyes are more over the arrow with my head tilted right over.

I too am right handed, but with a left dominant eye. It seems strange that we have so many members in this situation. I'd say there are far more people so effected right here, on this thread than what you'd expect by the law of averages within the normal population. If this is true, I wonder why? :?

Both eyes open with my set up, just like the old days of shooting instinctive.

Left eye closed on compound, both open on trad.

I have already picked the distance to the target before I sight the bow.

I considered doing this, however it would be a PIA to clean the lens when not shooting.

I am going to try some of those cheap clip on sunglasses & remove the right lens & change the left to a blind.

Same as warlock. I range my game before the shot so distance recognition is not a problem with one eye open. Helps me concentrate on my target and form.

Left eye closed on compound, both open on trad.

I have already picked the distance to the target before I sight the bow.

I do the same! Works fine for me.

Yeah but i am left eye dominant, tried to where patch for a while to try and correct this but to no avail. So have worked on trying to adapt to left handed and couldn't shoot at all, so stayed with right hand and just adjusted the way i shoot, it feels more natural for me and seems to work. So if it's working i will stick to it.

both eyes open for trad. left eye closed for sights

Willy_R

Ok then if being serious.

I am a right-hander whom is left eye dominant, shoots Left-handed !
( both eyes for sightless or multi pins)
Bonuses there is you use your dominant pointing control arm to hold and aim bow, and my not so controlled left hand to release which is unimportant as I use backtension to release anyhow !

The down side is the kicking you cop each time you trade in your lefty bow ! And the time you have to wait when new bows are released, before lefty's are avail !

And Shooting lefty F2F in mixed company has its benefits !
