View Full Version : Crows
Shooting crows with the bow does not really intrest me even though i know they would be a challenge to get. I have seen shooting articles in shooter magazines where people have been shooting them and even useing decoys. I am curious because i always thought crows were native and was brought up not shooting them..? so why is it that shooters shoot them and is it legal to take them withg a bow?

Don't go shooting crows mate
There are some species that are huntable in some states, but the rules are complex and you have to be able to tell what species you are hunting.
as i said it does not intrest me shooting them and i am not going to.. But i was just woundering why some people do it and if there is some way it is legal. thanx jindy looks like there is some legal way to hunt them.

G'day Macka.
As far as the law goes,i'm not too sure as to the do's and dont's in regards to shooting crows.
But the reason some people shoot crows as they regard them as pests, because at times...a crow will land on the back of either a calf or lamb, and as the calf or lamb turns around to see what is on its back....the crow will peck the eyes out of the poor lil fella's.I have also heard of the crows pecking at the eyes of very young ..ie,...new born lambs and calf's as they lay on the ground.
just my two bobs wirth..
cheers
Hey my point being that people might see the articles in the mags and just go out and shoot crows even if they are protected in some states. because the mags are distribted in all states. IMO and i'm on a farm with sheep and cattle i think all the cases that i have seen with animals with their eye's pecked out by crows the animals have already been dead. I am yet to see an animal with its eye's pecked out while it is still alive. Seen eagles take a lam or two but i bet crows would get a few newbornes.

Hi Guys
Near where I live there are large flocks of crows, and some crow hater started to poison them with laced corn.
Anyway it hit the fan and the Rangers, Council and Police wanted to burn whoever was doing it at the stake.
They had a lot of public backing law or no law.

The 3 crows in the pic I posted in my interveiw were shot off a sheep that was still very much alive. I have seen it way too many times.
Have you ever been out hunting and had a camp under a tree and been woken up by a crow dropping twigs on you to see if you move. I always sleep with my hat covering my eyes at least seeing crows always take the eyes first on a carcass...Glenn...

:D My wife and I were up in the mountains once and our car broke down. We had a passing car get a message to someone to come get us but we knew it would be a long wait so we crashed out on the grass for a couple of hours. We woke up to find about a dozen crows perched in the trees around us, and more than a couple on the ground next to us giving us the once over. It was more than a little rattling

In the past I have seen crows pecking at sick and wounded sheep so they got smoked with a 7mm Remington magnum. I've seen them hastling native birds whilst Duck shooting, they also got turned into feather dusters. It probably isn't the right attitude, but in my eyes they are varmit scum.
Glenn and Jindy, reading your experiances sent a shiver down my back, just imagine getting your eye pecked out by a crow. That would really ruin a hunt.
I,m glad when having a nap out bush, I always have my hat covering my face too, though its usually for the little black vermin flies, I guess I'll be adding crows as well from now on. :D
I too have seen live sheep with their eyes pecked out, they were all old or sick but it's not a pretty sight. No pun intended. 8)

Fairly sure that CROWS/Ravens are protected, (in Vic and NSW)
Rick
I cant see how they could be protected as I am always seeing them in the the major shooting magazines shot by some very promonent SSAA members.

Confirmation- In the 2006 Victorian Hunting guide it states as follows-:
Protected Wildlife-
In victoria the term "protected wildlife" refers to wildlife(other than pest animals) and includes all kinds vertebrates, such as native birds(eg all CROWS & RAVENS, cockatoos and snipe), mammals (eg Kangaroos), reptiles and amphibians and any introduced species (ie Deer and game birds) which are declared protected wildlife,,
I also am postive crows and ravens are protected in NSW.
