hi guys
im new to the group and have just taken up archery after a 15 year break.looking at the range of new bows out there, i went all out and bought an archery research 37 just before christmas. Wow i loved it.
but i made the fatal mistake of buying some cheap korean carbon shafts
and learned that that this is not the way to go with the hi tech bows of today.i hope others will learn from my mistake. any way, great site and i hope u enjoy the pic.

hi again
the shafts were no name ones from the hodywell web site and were spined correctly for my draw length and poundage.he has since down rated them.the shaft exploded in three places on its first shot.it took surgery to remove and to reattach one tendon but i was back at work in 2 weeks and shooting(with some better shafts) with in the month and now have 3 goats to my tally.even after this i will keep shooting carbons as they perform like nothing else.
thanks for fixing the link coach and good to see you back .
cheers

bad luck mate :( and thanks for the warning  .
Streuth Mate that's nasty
I am glad to hear you have recovered well and all is now o.k.
I have not had any experiance with carbons, can this still happen with the more expensive brands or are they manufactured differently to prevent splitting like that?
I was considering purchasing some of the Carbon Tech Rino mark 2 shafts to try out through my recurve. Because they are 2nds doesn't mean they are any weaker does it?

gday paul
i dont know too much at all about carbon shafts exept that u should check them for damage, as in hit byanother arrow, tree or bone, by giving them the bend test and looking for splits or fractures.and i would now never shoot one that looks the slightest bit suss. can anyone else recomend how to check ur carbons
cheers

sorehand what u have said is correct..the bend test and a careful inspection..and if u think it has any flaw, dont shoot it....
that was serious that happened to u..glad ur ok....id stick with the major brands,,,easton, carbon express,goldtips..im sure there are others, ive never had a problem with any of these...cheers pat :D
sorry to hear that mate - glad to see you recovered.
after seeing some other pics of similar injuries i'd say you were slightly luckier than some others, but all those carbon-through-the-hand pics make me cringe every time.
anyway the bend test is a good way to go, as sometimes the outside of the shaft looks ok but theres trouble brewing inside.
another way to check is unscrew the point and look into the shaft from the point end with a strong light at the nock end.
on the subject of brands, these days i'm using the carbon vapor shafts which i think are generally much better than goldtips IMO.
the outside has a very tough/smooth coating (unlike the GT's) and so far i've only damaged one - when i was practicing with broadheads and the head cut a chunk outa the shaft.
i used to use GT's a lot, and many times would pull the shaft out of what ever it hit, to find small splinters raised off the outside of the shaft. wont be using them again.
i also found the eastern epics to be better overall than the GT's.
ooowwwwch!
I had the same thing happen years ago with wooden shafts, had to get it reopened by plastic surgeon 6 months later to remove the wood they missed on the first clean out, but I WOOD rather have wood over carbon fibers!

It looks like a Carbon Express arrow I know they are made in Korea.
I have seen other pictures of where they have failed as well.
Think I will stick to my AC Superslims.
Here ya go I fixed it up so others can see the pic

yep it hurt heaps and will take 12 months or more to regain full movement.i believe there are a number of brands of arrows made out of these shafts. i will give all cheapies a miss n recomend the same to everyone.

Yep, thats got to hurt. Seen this before with a bloke using a timber shaft of poor quality out of a 65 lbs bow. Same sort of result but up the arm. Would not be to keen on a carbon. Hope it all heels well for you.

Ouch,
Maybe I will take up marbles instead... No wait when I was a kid someone ended up in hospital due to a marbles related incident...
How about chess? Did anyone ever get hurt playing chess?

I defiantly say this and your’s are isolated incidents, and I will NEVER use Alloys again, just make sure you stick to better brands and do the old flex test on your shafts if they had been used allot or hit or been hit by something hard.
If you figured out how many carbon or graphite shafts are shot everyday around the world, then the percentage of failure would be very very low, even when the yanks that tend to use the minimum weight per pound of draw force though there compounds to shoot 3D (5grains per pound of draw weight) I surprised here are not most arrows though hands and bows wrapped around heads over there!
