sorry about dumb questions, but deer don't offically exist in West Oz bush and i've yet to see one myself.
however, found out where there's a few reds running free and decided to waste time trying to shaft one (be happy to even see one).
never having heard a red stag roar before - is it distinctive?? i mean, could a novice like me work out the difference between a red roaring and a bull (lots a cattle in this area)??
also, what kinda range would average doe have? I know where they'be been released from (old deer farm) and just wondering if they'd take a residence close to that vicinity (patches of scrub everywhere) or perhaps move on? do reds have a large range?
any other tips for novice after first red with big odds against then please reply.
ps - there's only been a handful shot (all spotlights at night) so far and no-one has got within cooeee of one with a bow.
Regarding the roaring.. you'll kmow mate trust me

Yeah Hawkeye, Like Macka said you will not mistake a red roaring. Very distinct sound. The reds are just like most game if there is enough food and water to sustain them without being disturbed they will stay in the general area. The stags will stick to the same ridge or spur on a hill in the roar, but will stay in the thick most of the time. Fallow deer also have a roar, it's a little different than the reds, hard to discribe in words. I have heard of a small heard down south of Perth, i have a couple of friends down in the wine areas that have seen deer that way, they are not into deer, but from what they said, sounds like reds. Best of luck getting on to them.

a red deer roar goes for longer than cattle and sometimes does it a few times not just once maybe 3 or 4 times you wont mistake it and as for fellow they dont have a roar, its more of a grunt, like if you put your hands over your mouth and nose and snort like a pig it sounds sorter similar to that sort of, do you know about there habit in the rut or not?

got a general jist Jerry - thrashing and rubbing shrubs etc.
still gonna be like looking for a needle in a haystack (even if i had a spotlight and .270).
hearing 'em roar is easily my best bet.
hawkeye like jerry said the fallow grunt like a pig or a big burp. sort of sound a bit like a some frogs croaking but its so loud you can hear it frmo km's away in the right conditions so i doubt you will hear it and not know what it is. People take cans of pepsie out and try and burp in the stags.. never tried it but heard its been done.

Yeah i suppose thats how to descibe it like Macka said a big burp sound. They will also bark when they have a few years on them. IME the stag to go a get a look at is the one that as a very broken roar or grunt as he is generaly older and has less staying power. These tend to have the better head around that 5 to 7 year old stage. Not always the case, just what i have experienced. There are so many ideas, but the more time you spend chasing them around the more you end up with your own ideas and theories.

thanks guys.
i'd just be stoked hearing a deer (let alone seeing one). :D
i only hope they can establish themselves before they all end up as dog food, nailed by the spotlighting crew. :(
