View Full Version : Stubborn Foxes
Went out this arvo for a fox hunt.. Saw one completley ignored the whistle only looked my once and then kept snooping allong the creek.. he could hear me! The country has HEAPS of foxes there i know because i have spotlighted it before but because there are not many rabbits there they dont come into a whistle. Owen said to try a predator call because i have seen a few hares there.. any other ideas?
here's a pic of the country.

Give a cork on a vegimite jar a crack. it sounds like a little bird, works on cats sometimes.

What is a predator call actually impersonating and where do you get them? And why would a hare respond to a predator call? Appreciate some answers. Thanks.

The Scotch predator call is a bellows type piece of tube, you push and pull it and it gives the sound of a distressed rabbit. It work's on just about all game : fox, wild dogs, dingoes, even rabbits, hares, deer (have been known to respond to it in the roar) goats, pigs etc. I think some of these it's more of a curiosity thing. There is a good video you can get that shows the call being used, it's Tom Varney's calling foxes video. Also when you but the call it has a tape to explain how it works and the different methods of use.

Thanks heaps for that Grunter. I just have a plain old tin whistle but have had no luck with it. I shall purchase one of these scotch predator calls and give it a belt. Hopefully then i'll have some more pics to put up on the site because of it.

No problem there mate. There are a number of other calls that work a treat, the best ones i have found are the Will Primos calls from the states. They seem to have that magic about them.

hey macka is there any thicker scrub in the area, any thicker gullys black berry bushes, tussocks, porkypine grass in the area try a about 2 hours before dark in the thicker parts of the area where the foxes are camped up in the thicker scrub getting ready to go out, if the whistles not working use the preditor that will, when you use it tire string around the end of it not the wood part and put your foot on the wood part and have the string in your hand, so when you see him hopefully 80-100 yards out you can drop the string and step on the end of it and hill hear that and come in closer if any closer hill maybe see you clip you release on. hope that helps other people probebly have better ideas. jerry
Jerry there is a creek running through the whole lot thick of rieds. The foxes hide up in there and there are some gullies and hill faces thick of rose bushes and wattle, Logs everywhere for them to hide up in too. its perfect country for them. I did most of my whistling over the rieds in the creek and these scrubbier gullies but they wouldnt have a bar of it.. Will have to get a predator call. any idea where you can get them in aus?
