over the last couple weeks every now and then i would catch a glimpse of a lone dingo trotting past my back fence, only 50 metres from the house.
usually around 9 to 930 am,twice ive raced out in just my boxers,[not a pretty site] armed with my switchback. ive gotten into about 60 metres, but then he would dissapear into the long grass..

i thought ,dont worry your day will come.i decided to set up a tree stand two days ago on the back fence, wired a bit of carcass to the steel post and mounted my moultrie digital game camera, hoping to catch a few shots of him.

i went and checked today and found that some of the meat had gone, plus i had numerous pictures of this dingo on my camera.i was rapt,so i said to myself, time to get up there, but you are going to use your new 60lb recurve.

i only recieved this recurve a couple weeks ago, first time really trad shooting, except about 20 years ago i did have a longbow, but she broke..
so ive been practising every day on my 3d deer and large boar up to about 15 to 18 metres

so this arvo after having a dozen practice shots,i walked the long 50 metre walk to my waiting tree stand armed with my recurve, some hair shaving 125grain outback hunters fixed to carbon shafts, naturally fletched with feathers along with my video camera.

i was up in the stand about 5pm,with the a good strong east wind into my face as i was perched up about 4 metres high. i checked everything into place, took some footage of some little finchs and refocused the camera on the carcass.

i have a young dog ,scar who is about 3 to 4mths old,she decides she wants to check things out,i give her a warning and she runs back inside the house fence and sits and watches.about 30 minuntes later i notice a black tail wagging over the dam wall,i think its scar, and i mutter to myself you will be in trouble when i get home.

suddenly looking up i see another 6 to 7 dark shapes emerge out on the dam wall..ive company. here is 7 to 8 good size fatten up hogs feeding only 50 to 60 metres awy from the house and coming my way.i turn the video on and start filming.

they end up turning and feeding away down the dam wall and out into the paddock.i decide i better get on down and have a go.i leave the video behind, strap the back quiver on,place an arrow on the rest and proceed to follow.

the grass is mostly about 2 ft high to 3 ft in patches as i see the black shapes dissapearing and reappearing. they are feeding with the wind to their backs which is perfect for me,as i stalk along closer, using small bean trees as cover.

i close the gap on a small boar to 15 metres and contuine to get in closer as he his busy rooting away the soft ground. there is a good size boar another 10 metres in front, but to be truthful, first time out with my recurve,i was excited as and was happy to take this fella closest to me.

im now only 8 to 10 metres away, with a good quartering away angle present.i draw back, anchor, concertrate on a spot behind his back ribs and release my arrow.the bow is ever so quiet on release and the 28 inch shafts buries deeply into the young boar. he lets out a squeal runs 30 plus metres, pulls up and down he goes.

meanwhile the larger boar and party dont really know what is going on,they have a little scuffle ,pull up and look around, then casually move off feeding again.i thought about going after the big fella, but i hadnt recoverd this fella yet,and i was happy as to put a good shot in on this young boar.

i waited a bit and then moved across to where i last saw the young fella, arrow on the rest ,ready if need be.i searched up and down a few times and finally found him just on the other side of the barb wire fence, arrow still intack and deeply buried in his side.the feathers were abit worse for wear, but thats easily fixed later on.

i was totally excited,as this was my first shot at game with my new trad bow and i had made a clean one arrow kill. you have to be happy with that.thought id share my first trad moment with u all..cheers pat :D :D

Well done Pat,

Good story and photo to boot. Does this mean that you are giving up wheely bows for a while? or is this just a bow hunters mid life crisis? :D

Cheers, Dave.

I am glad you are having good results from the Moultrie. I was looking at buying one, but I have found that as always you get what you pay for. These guys have been talking about quality issues with the Moultrie for a while now, and today they sent them this open letter……

Statement To the Moultrie Company Management
February 24, 2006

Moultrie Camera Management,

We at www.chasingame.com presently own several of your cameras. We were lucky to have purchased cameras that seem to work as designed. This is definitely not the case with a large number of folks that have sent us mail daily complaining about your product line. It seems that the act of buying one of your cameras is like playing the Power Ball Lottery. A persons chance of winning seems to be getting smaller and smaller as your new models are placed on the market. We have folks that have some of your cameras that have minor difficulties such as moon phase issues and are in fear of returning them because the company might just replace it with one of their lemons.

You have to realize that the trail camera buying public is becoming more savvy and it is because of places like our site that tries to keep them informed so they do not end up with a product that is less than functional. We know that your company has been quick to return new products for those cameras that were sent back because of operating issues. For this we commend you. To replace a returned item with an item that has the same problem "not just once but up to 5 times" is inexcusable.

Now comes the issue of customer service. They are very nice and somewhat up to par on most issues, but when it comes to questions of a technical nature (remember your customer is a hell of a lot smarter today than they were two years ago) they want answers. All issues dealing with firmware and such should be made available to your customer service folks so when they are asked a question, we do not get that stuttering "I don't know" thing.

With all these issues, these folks, including myself, have made attempts to get answers by E Mail and by phone. You sir, or your representative have failed to return these calls. We have strongly recommended your products in the past but as of today we are pulling that recommendation. We are not a giant like Moultrie, But Sir be advised that we have over 10k visitors per month that are all either past, present, or future users of scouting cameras. We have only one mission and that is to inform the buying public about scouting cameras. Hopefully you will change your ways and make an effort to address these issues. I make it a daily task to scout all the popular hunting/outdoor forums and pay attention to what I am seeing about scouting camera issues and believe me your camera issues are at the top of the list.

Sincerely,
Bill Poulson

http://www.chasingame.com/ have a lot of reviews on the different cameras for anybody who wants to check them out.

mick that was abit scary....i had a 35mm another brand,i could not get it to anything...

i bought this off a mob in the states and they say they are returned cameras and hav ben tested and ok with a 12mths warrenty...but hey when u read above that they keep sending u ones witht he same prob, its a bit worrying..

i did see on a site somewhere where a bloke was filming his moutrie as he tested it and showed it took two passes to start, mine does that, its ok with what im doing here, but i know it woulod be not ok if u were watching a trail it would miss an animal on its pass...

mick ill save that article, and anyone else who thinks they want one,ill pass it on...

over all ive heard that the cuddleback are the best...

i think ill still get a couple more, wonder if im pushing my luck??? :D :D

thanks for the info..cheers pat :D

That site still recomends them as the best buy for the price, and you won't find a cuddeback for $100 :D .
I was turned off by the returns buisness because of the postage costs.

I have been looking seriously at making my own. I will have to buy the bits but it will be a good project for those cold winter nights :D
