View Full Version : Dressing game

I have always taken my game well away from the the culling area to dress them.
Found a small very secluded valley that the Deer are habitating.
My problem is that it would be very difficult to take the game away from the cull area because of the very steep, rough terrain leading into and out of there.
Do any of you dress your game near the grazing site and, if you do, do the game come back to that area after a short time or move elsewhere to graze?

You won't notice any change in the habits of the deer UNLESS there are a lot of dogs in the area. The deer don't care much about the remains, but if the dogs are visiting them you won't see the deer near them for a little while.
If there are a few dogs and maybe pigs in the area then the remains won’t last a week anyway, and I have hunted deer not 100 metres from where I left a bag of guts a week before and it didn’t seem to worry the deer at all.

Thanks Jindy.
Didn't want to go and ruin a spot that took so long to find :D

I agree, all the deer I have taken, even when there internals are a bit stinky on the ground, I still found them in the same sections or gulley’s feeding when there where fresh or decomposing remains.
As per Jindy & Peter M :D

Same as Peter M & Jindy, have seen deer eat were there has been carcasses, but with a lot of dog activity can slow it down a little in that area.

When you say dog activity are you talking about foxes or actual "dogs".

Only dogs
Last year I got busted by a spiker while waiting for a shot on a dominant buck and all the deer moved off and then so did I. I only went 40 or 50 metres before finding (and shooting) a fox chewing on some bones from a buck that had been poached the week before. I have seen deer get nervous when foxes are running around but they don’t seem to put the frighteners on them much at all. Cam will tell you about the foxes that stuffed his first stalk on some fallow, they were headed right to the tree he was hiding behind and a couple of foxes playing in the grass nearby made them nervous so they turned and walked away.

It was one of those "shoot the fox, or concentrate on the deer" moments. Had a vixen on heat with a beaut looking male in prime condition trotting all around me, well within bow range, and while i struggled to make up my mind the deer made it up for me and left the scene and then the foxes were gone too...
Turns out i dont need foxes to stuff my deer hunt anyway, my peep sight did a fine job of that
Cheers, Cam
