I am not sure which sub-forum to post this, but this one seems to make the most sense.
I have a question that stems from a recent thread where I was engaged in what I thought was "friendly banter" with another member. During the course of that dialogue, both sides were "called names" , which is normally frown upon, but with the "wink" emotion, which I have always assumed to mean that the comment was intended to be a joke/friendly bit of cheek.
Is this everyone's understanding? Have I misused the emoticon? Look forward to some feedback.

I think its meant to be light hearted. But at the same time you still have to watch what you say, justcause you wink doesnt mean things arent rude.

Agreed.
Sometimes people hide behind it, sometimes people don't realise something comes across as rude.
Either way, I believe the old saying goes "The truest words are oft spoke in jest"
Offically:

Says it pretty damn well.
Its like when i provide advice to clients; it always comes with a disclaimer attached. But the disclaimer doesnt mean I can put whatever I like in my advice and it doesnt stop people from suing me for giving the wrong advice.
Emoticons can be used to 'HELP' set the tone of what is being said but that doesnt take away the need to consider what they are being attached to.
A mud cake with a nice sugar icing is still going to taste like dirt.

Spot on Barry
If, as we all know, a whole paragraph can be missinterpreted then what hope has anybody of getting meaning across with a smiley
And yes, a chrome plated turd is still a turd

The net is a hard place to communicate sometimes
The net is a hard place to communicate all the time.
And maybe this is the sort of disclaimer Barry needs

Yes some people use them all the time Jacob and you can tell they are serious with what they have written but then use winks etc to make it seem allright. im sure most people can see through it anyway.
