View Full Version : A great w/e

Mozza and I went up to my favourite deer property on the w/e for a hunt and a look to see how the rut was progressing. A pack that ran a deer down inside the deer fences and killed it on Thursday night and I was lucky enough to find them on Saturday morning shot a dog that was part of the pack.

On Saturday evening we had some great stalks and Mozza got to take his second fallow with a bow.

Yes mate, if I didn't it wouldn't be on here just as the other 2 fallow this w/e aren't.

I shot him at about 7 am and he ran into a huge patch of blackberries and died right in the middle of them. I went back to camp and waited for Mozza to get back from up the hill (he had the mob of dogs run past him right after and got them on video). We went back to get him after we had a feed and a rest. I was peaking out pretty badly after shooting him, the ***** started howling to him and I had visions of having to fend off a pack of dogs. It was a pretty exciting morning :D

My compound.
I took my longbow with me and I didn't even take it out of it's bag  And I could have had him trad style too, I shot him at only 10 metres. Here is Mozza deep in the blackberry recovering the dog for me. Those big black choppers I keep on the floor of the car came in real handy :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/jindydiver/doginthebush.jpg

Here he is again, you can see the dead deer behind me to the right, up against the fence.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/jindydiver/wilddog2.jpg
Cam will recognize the spot (it is the first creek 300 metres from camp, where the foxes blew his first stalk)

I should have had my longbow or my recurve on our walk on Sat' arvo. Mozza and I stopped to have a chat and figure our next move after some roos buggered up a great stalk I put in (roos, can't live with em, can't kill em :D ) and a doe walked out of the scrub and started up the trail straight to us. She stopped a few times and checked us out (2 stunned mullets dressed in ASAT) and she kept coming. She was broadside to us at 8 metres and she looked away and if I had have been carrying my longbow instead of the wheelie I would have had a go, but no chance with the compound and no arrow even nocked  . She took about another 3 or 4 steps and then she smelt us and she practically turned inside out trying to get back down the trail at full speed.
But anyway, you take them as they come hey :D

Didnt think you were into shooting animals behind wire Jindy? only joking mate, if the bastards are killing stock then shoot them where they stand i rekon.

Well done also to Mozza, that small stag will make a great feed and an even better floor rug, a nice way to start the deer season.

I had an awesome weeekend away with jindy, the country where we were was beautiful.
we had plenty of stalks onto deer, jindy got to within 25 meters of five deer only to have a couple of roos jump up out of the grass 5 meters from him and spook the deer :x
I got in close a few times and either stuffed the stalk or had the wind give me away.
It was awesome to find that Jindy shot one of the dogs, they were sneaking through the fence and pulling down deer, I got a bit of video of them but unfortunately didn't shoot one.
They are such a had animal to find in that country, let alone shoot one, so a great trophy for Jindy :)

I agree mate  , but I can still honestly say I have never shot anything behind wire, and I will tell you that if I had have known there was so many I would have gone back to the car and swapped my bow for the 30.06 and really made a dent in them :D The property owner (and his neighbour, who knew the dog I shot by sight) were very pleased I had got him as this was the second deer in a week that the mob had run down and killed. The property owner tells me that once they learn this behaviour you need to make a real effort and get the lot if you can because they can start costing you a lot of money.

This is the ***** that was the leader of the pack.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/jindydiver/wilddog3.jpg
She is inside the fence and looking down at the other dogs feeding on the carcase. I backed off and came at them from another direction and when I got to the fence I couldn’t see them, then I heard them rustling in the bracken over the rise to my left and outside of the paddock. They had moved out under the fence and were getting set to head out across the woodland to their home in a patch of state forest that borders the property. It was just what I needed because I really had no idea how I was going to get through the fence to stalk them without getting busted.
When I shot the dog he ran past me back into the paddock through a hole under the fence and the ***** moved off up the hill through the trees to where Mozza was watching a small mob of deer. The ***** had seen me move as I sighted, and the dog went apes hit after I hit him, so she wasn’t going to hang around. When she was about half way between me and Mozza she let out a really cool howl and of course that stuffed Mozza’s deer hunting for the morning.

I was very impressed with Mozza’s mechanical broad heads. It went right through a shoulder blade (the bottom trailing edge of it) then cut the heart to **** and then sliced right through a rib (right on the brisket) and it could still kill again.

Well done fellas. It was a weekend to remember. It sounds like those dogs are a real problem and you would have done the farmer good service by ridding him of one. Good one Jindy. Mozza's fallow was the cream on the pudding. 8)

well done Jindy and co and phenomenal reading/thread. primeval hunting/wilderness stuff that.

but yeah... when it comes down to tackling such a mob of mongrels a M60 GPMG on a tripod would certainly be handy and hell warranted.

That is great stuff Jindy, how many dogs were in the pack do you reckon?
Are they likely to turn on a person do you reckon .
I agree it would be unnerving thinking that a pack of wild dogs was lurking around. But ok if you had a 357 in the holster with you

I like taking you young blokes for a hunt, who else is going to carry all the deer, certainly not mehttp://www.madmick3006.com/Gif_pics/forum_fun/whip.gifhttp://www.madmick3006.com/Gif_pics/forum_fun/rofl2.gif
And it seems I can’t take anybody from the site for a hunt there without shooting a dog, so far I am 2 for 2.http://www.madmick3006.com/Gif_pics/forum_fun/thumbs_up.gif

I think that it was a mob of 4 :?:
There was the big ***** plus the dog I shot, and as they ran past where Mozza was he saw the big ***** and I think 2 others.

There are a few packs in the area and one of the other guys that hunts there targets them and I just spoke to him on the phone and he knows of this mob (and this dog in particular). This is one of the dogs taken there last year…
http://www.blackfoot.com.au/library/howled-dog.jpg

And another that could quite possibly be the source of my dogs face colour….

This pic was taken about the time of last years rut with a game cam. It was set up about 1 km from where I shot the dog this w/e….

And of course the reason the game cam was set up....

We didn't see any bucks except the spikers. They are still in bachelor herds and living in the forested areas and only coming out late at night. We heard them on Friday night about 2 in the morning. They were belting away at each other and the noise woke us both and poor Mozza couldn’t get back to sleep he was so excited.
It wont be long and they will split up and we will start seeing them around. We might get back up there in 2 weeks time and check.

I my area last week there are does in estrus already (allot of does bleating) as there have been a buck and spilkers chasing them already, no grunting yet but I think the season will start a little earlier that last year in my area anyway.

Also they have fully striped and have color also.

jindy they look like some pretty big dogs your mate shot, and they certainly dont look like they have much/any actual dingo in them - could they be pig dogs that where lost by their owners? either way its good to see you and your mate keeping up the pressure on them.

my fox terrier was taken from our backyard a few years ago by what looked like a couple of rougue rotweiler/something else mongrels (very big dogs), not far outside brisbane.
keep up the good work.

ps: those 2 dogs in the gamecam pic look more like dingoes - are they?

I would have thought with those brush tails and large chests they had plenty of dingo in them.

could they be pig dogs that where lost by their owners?

That pack would kill any strange dog that appeared in their territory... maybe a ***** in heat MIGHT be accepted but otherwise they are all outa luck.
