Luke and I took our young sons camping and hunting on the weekend and we all had a great time and shared some great experiences together. Luke's son Taylor is 8 and my son Lachlan is 6 and although they are not yet ready to take game with their bows they still enjoyed hunting and stalking with their Father's and we enjoyed teaching them a thing or two.

I'll just give you a quick report, the hunting went well and the boys got to see some game taken by their father's.
Luke arrowed a nanny and a big tom cat and I took a couple of billies with my recurve. One of the billies has a spread of 39" and is the biggest in the horn department that I have taken so far.
We also had a couple of good close stalks on pigs and goats with the boys that didn't end up with game being taken but hopefully taught them some valuable lessons.
We all enjoyed ourselves and Luke and I had a great time in the bush teaching and bonding with our sons and we plan on doing it again soon. :D

I've posted a couple of pictures, but I'm sure Luke will post some more, he had the better camera and therefore took most of them.

G'day Pat, the smaller billy was taken with a heart shot from 15m, the perfect one arrow kill. The big fella was arrowed from 18m and required a follow up shot from 5m. I am extremely happy mate, he is the biggest billy I have seen while hunting and by far the biggest in this area. :D Luke was unlucky not to get a shot at him the afternoon before while stalking the same mob.

Yeah thanks Scott, I'm still a bit shocked that I managed to arrow a billy that big.

I wouldn't have a clue how to measure it up Pat. I have always just judged a billy on his body size and horn width. :D

paul if u feel like it..grab a soft tape, sewers tape...

1. measure the fighting edge of both horns, dont go into the pits etc and doulbe the smallest measurement.

2. measure both of the bases again double the smallest

3. measure tip to tip

now add the three mesurements together....

let us know if u hav e any worries..

There are some good photos there Luke, you'll have to send me some. Man it looks like we were close to that mob, I didn't realise that they had worked there way up out of the gully, it's no wonder your stalk was blown, sorry mate. :D

Thanks boys.

It was a great weekend with Paul and Lockie and my son, Taylor.

As Paul said, the boys learnt heaps, saw a few good stalks and got close to some game.

While they were not actively hunting themselves, they carried their bows and gear and kept up with us very well. Despite the thousands of spear grass seeds and cobbler's pegs burs there was very little complaining. Their patients was fantastic when waiting for us on a few occasions to complete long stalks and their yakka up and down the big hills was beyond their years. Can't wait to do it again.

I got the cat with one arrow from about 28 m's, he went about 3 m's and expired

My bow is a Hoyt Cybertec, 70 pounds @ 28.5 inches, shooting carbon rebels with an outback hunter 125gr leading the way. The big Tom didn't stand a chance ;)

I measured those horns for anyone that is interested, they worked out at 126 points, thanks for telling me how Pat.

I don't know what that means on the scale of things, but they will make for a good display on my wall to help remind me of a great weekends hunt and the experiences I shared with my son and good friends. :D

well mate unofficially uve cracked into the record class of goats.. i think trophy class is around 75 to113pts ..

so id be very pleased with them..may i suggest get a nice plaque made up and hang them proudly at home..

did u see any bigger than him there??

and do be polictically correct any game taken with a bow is a trophy :D

big well done pat :D

Paul R

any game taken with a bow is a trophy

Too right Pat.

I'll definately be mounting them on a plaque with a photo underneath or something similar, thanks for the advice.

He is the biggest that I have seen on this property and the biggest I have seen period. By the look of some of the younger billies in this mob including the other one that I arrowed, Luke and I reckon he has spread his genes around which is good and one of his prodogy would already have a 30" spread. Hopefully they hang around. :D

Scott
28-03-06, 04:49 PM
Mate when you see a big fella like this, you can bet your bottom dollar there is more there the same and bigger. Looks like he has good genes and he had to get them from somewhere. Get into the roughest most unforgiving part of the property, from experience thats where the real big fella's are. cheer's Scott

paul probably a good idea is to let scott and myself know where u got him and we can check and let u know if there is any bigger ones..

what u reckon scott,good idea??

with all the game being taken latly decided to pull my finger out..sat up last night ,checked over a dozen shafts, made sure woodys 125g hunters were razor sharp and took young fella out this arvo..

after and hour,i spotted a boar rooting about, sent sam in whilst i was on the camera..got into about 15 to 18 metres and took a shot with his 60lb equus recurve..
hit the boar ,but was hard to say exactly where with the long grass.i know it was forward and a good height, but penertration looked only one lung..

i kept saying closer ,closer, but it was his first,so a bit nervous..

tracked him for a bit, light was going fast,so back in the morning..i saw him fall once..so heres hoping...

 Your both welcome to come along with Luke and me anytime, i'm sure you could both teach me a thing or two regarding bowhunting.

Good luck with finding that boar tomorrow Pat, if you saw him fall down once then i'm sure you'll find him. Your lad must have been excited, i'm yet to shoot a good boar so I can imagine how he must have felt.
Good luck

That's a very good goat Paul, 126 points, that use to be the Australian record once, well done. Looks as though everybody had a good weekend...Glenn...

126 points, that use to be the Australian record once,

That must have been a long time a go Glenn. :D

I reckon there's a lot more feral goats around now, it seems to be you can find them just about everywhere now, just like pigs.
Some areas I hunted 20 years ago had no pigs or goats and now have plenty. Of course now that they are there, I can't gain hunting access.

Gee's Pat that is a good idea, we could be the scouts and report back at the end of every week. I have a sneaking suspicion I already know where this block is mate!

By gee thats a generous offer Paul! I dont think you need any help in bowhunting when you grass big fella's like this mate. But if you really want some help we would have to talk about it around the camp fire. ('')

All the best to you guys on finding them big blokes. cheer's Scott.

Luke

I've heard you do know where this block is Scott...;)...might be a great central location to meet up sometime hey? Would be a pleasure!

I love nothing better than seeing kids in the bush. I'm positive those boys were stoked just to be with their Dads- real 'Mens' Business' that. No bl88dy Playstations there. It's good to see people of our generation keeping traditions alive and ensuring they are passed on. I hope that my daughter (and baby in baking) will have the same opportunities (once back home in Oz.) Again, congratulations on superb bowhunting and perfect childrearing.

So lads just out of curiosity..how did you go about introducing your bows to the bow..my young bloke who is also 8 won't put the "game boy" down long enough to let it cool down, despite watching me and having been taken around the 3d ranges with me so he can "spot" the animals. No its not as simple as taking away the game boy..also tried that and it just wasn't worth the misery that followed.

Paul R
07-04-06, 01:24 PM
Yes it can be tough getting kids interested sometimes Johnno and getting them away from the instant entertainment which gameboys etc provide can be challenging to say the least.

I remember when I was a young lad, I loved going hunting with my Dad because of the time I spent with him and the fun we had and above all I wanted him to be proud of me. My motivation for going hunting with him had very little to do with actually hunting, although the older I became the more I enjoyed hunting in the bush. By the age of 12 I was still going hunting to enjoy my Father's company but, I was also gaining great satisfaction in hunting by myself.

I have found with my son that I have to incorporate other fun activities into a hunting trip and because I do he usually associates camping and hunting with fun. I usually take some board games and lollies and we do some other fun activities. I usually take him on shorter, easier hunts and praise him alot for his efforts and try to make things more interesting for him, it usually means less hunting and more work for me, but the last thing I want is for my son to associate hunting with boredom and misery.

Oh and the Gameboy is allowed in the car for the drive there and back but put away as soon as we get to our hunting destination. :D

Thanks Paul :D I'm heading off over the Easter weekend hopefully to nail a goat and "blood" the new bow. Taking my son and my mate is taking his boy. Good time for a bit of "bonding" and will deffinately take your comments on board :D :D

I reckon Paul's bang on the money with the way to handle Playstation withdrawals... from what I've seen they are 'addictive.' It must just seem nostalgic to kids and totally unrelated to their technology-driven lives, when we try to relate our experiences off growing up with the bush and it's interests to them. My daughter often prefers to do paper craft in the car while I'm practising in the bush. Yeah Paul, time and patience will win through in the end.
