View Full Version : Fletchings
Gaday fella's...Just bought myself an old recurve and when it gets here i am gonna make up some woods and see what all this traditional fuss is about...
I will be shooting it off the shelf so my question is about the position of my fletches...where do you place them so they don't affect the arrow flight..A couple of pic's would be good...
Regards...Sparra
Sparra, your nocking point is cricital when shoting off the shelf, normally an eight of an inch above square is a good place to start. You can shoot vanes off the shelf as well but the nocking point will have to be higher than for fletches. Normally the cock feather goes out but if you are having problems with fishtailing try try cock feather in. Sometimes flight problems can come from shooting the string off the finger tips, get a good deep hook on the string back in the first groove of the fingers, you get a much cleaner release and better arrow speed....Glenn....
5inch feathers are the way to go just give yourself enough clearance for your fingers and glove. About an inch is what I like.

Thanks fella's...I'll make some up and see how it goes but i guess it's like everything else we do....trial and error...I'll let you know how i get on...
Regards...Sparra
Sparra,
I agree with the 5" feathers, have used them for ever. Since recently trying carbons I tried 4" as well, a little more clearance and still acheived good flight, even stuck a few on POC shafts, no dramas. I believe I will stick with 5", but if needed would not hesitate with 4". If you have shelf clearance problems you might like to try with cock feather at 12 o'clock, others at 4 & 8.:D
