View Full Version : samik bows/fast flight
hi guys - have just ordered a samik takedown bow 50# and was wondering if they are fast flight compatable or not? for glenn: finally found an archery shop over here mate - took a lot of looking and some help from my new girlfriend (japanese of course) 8)
Brian, Specs, should be with the bow or at least :) be on the Samick site??
Just had a look, what model is you bow??, the Samick Deerslayer is F/Flight, some others are Dacron:)
I have the Samick Mind-30 55#. But can't find any info on their site about if any are fast flyte compatable.

axe: i ordered a pheonix model from a local shop (or at leaste i'm pretty sure thats what i ordered). for you guys who dont know - i'm currently living/working in nagoya - japan. so as you can imagine it was an interesting exercise ordering in a language i'm not too good at. just curious more than anything about the fastflight. am also wondering if samik usually supplies a string with each bow or if i will need to get one made up.cheers fellas/axe
Samick supply a string with each bow sold. But as to the quality I'm not sure. As the strings I have for my bow when I got it are after market ones.
The Pheonix is a nice looking bow.

Brian, as Hood said you'll get a string with the bow, as to type of string, not sure, because of the model, I would assume it would also be F/F (I say assume) I'm sure there'll be some info with the bow, and the limb tips should have overlays (reinforcement) if they don't, probably not F/F. :) Mate, all this F/F stuff is fine, but is not the be all to end all, if you shoot at respectable hunting distances, the extra few feet F/F gives is academic. Sorry for my added opinions, but I don't know your experience. :)
The address below will show you the Samick Deerslayer specs. Just to varify Samick does have F/F compatable bows

Axe my Mind-30 has phalonic (spelling) overlays so I assume that would make my bow FF compatable  ????
I originally wanted to get the Deerslayer, but I didn't have the $$$ at the time so I got the Mind-30 with mtm case and 6 carbon arrows and other bits and bods for half the cost of the Deerslayer. Gotta be happy with that.

Reckon your right Hood on all counts re your bow, gotta tell ya IMHO Dyna Flyte97 is better stuff, in speed between Dacron & F/F, but much more durable, especially when Flemish Twist :D
Phenolic 8)
Thanks Axe almost had the right spelling
It's always fun trying new things just to see how they go. if they work great if not well try again with something else.
I found that with my Mind-30 I had to put something on the end of the limbs where the string rests, to stop the noise from the string slapping on release, I just used some moleskin fuzzy stuff and it worked a treat.

Yeah that works, might try increasing your brace height a tad :)
G'day Brian, good to see you are settled in over there and you found an archery shop. I don't know much about the Samick bows myself but if you do want to use a good quality string I wouldn't fast flight myself, as Axe said there are better strings about, I use 8125 for all of my bows. If it was my bow I wouldn't be afraid to use a no-stretch string, you just need the string loops built up with extra strands if it's a flemish string...Glenn...
yeah thanx guys. i guess i'll use whatever string the bow comes with - untill it wears out. 8) i'll only be target shooting for the time being - it seems bowhunting isnt really done here at all.(may be illegal - not really sure but thats the vibe i've gotten from most archery guys here) it has been quite difficult finding a hunting weight bow due to this. they only really shoot pipsqueek target bows (i aint interested in shooting blanks) - so i had to order outside japan. anyways whats your opinions on ordering things like arras, gloves etc. over the internet - never done it before and was wondering about the best sites with the biggest range of gear etc.
Well mate, If your gonna order outside Oz, 3 Rivers Archery.com are a traditional site.,have everything you need. Brian I personally use a glove, many will tell you use a tab, it's a case of suck it and see what's best for you, re arrows might be nice for some input from someone with your poundage bow, post what shaft you are going to use ie- wood, aluminium, carbon, but again you should bare shaft test whatever you get so as to figure out the best for your set up eg arrow spine, etc :D
Again, I don't know your experience, but Trad takes a little time to conquer

i've got a coupla years exp. under me belt axe but certainly am no expert. bought a defiant longbow off my good mate glenn last year. best thing i've ever forked out hard earned cash 4. beautiful bow. coulnt bear to risk it in the airline/courier service when i came to japan (start of march) - its the most valuable thing i own and just couldnt take the risk. anyways i'll probably end up shooting carbons (weighted of course) out of this samik. i've come to like their (dynamic) spine characteristics and durability, so i'll give 3 rivers a look-see. thanx mate.
I use 72# @ 28", I need to weight mine, Be surprised if you needed to weight at 50# work'n on say 10grn per lb, only 500grn your look'n at, stills safe at 8grn / 400grn, get that pretty easy, if you ain't hunt'n don't need much weight IMHO :) Anyway, good luck &have fun when your new toy comes :D
certainly will have some fun mate - cant wait for it. have gone for 2 months without shooting a bow so jeez i miss it. come to think of it your right about the weight. i normally shoot @ 60lb and i chose 50 for the reason you stated - so if need be i can shoot more easilly obtained light shafts without worry about bow damage. saying that i do prefer the "feel" of shooting a heavier shaft in terms of bow noise and vibration. will probably end up going with about 500gr as u said tho. what carbons would u recomend at this poundage (my draw is 28 1/2"). i'm thinkin go a bit over spined and then work up in point weight until i hit the right dynamic spine. dont want to screw round too much tho - remember i'm ordering all gear from the states so want to keep trial and error to a minimum. :D
Reckon someth'n like a Carbon Tech or Gold Tip 55/75, & as you said, you can increase the front end or leave 'em longer to soften the spine :)
I'm sure you are aware that if you shelf shoot you can use vanes, but it's preferable to use feathers??
Be good if you could borrow a couple from your Japanese friends before you outlay $8 or 9 a shaft (or dearer). You might find that if the 55/75 remain too stiff, 35/55 may be the answer ( from what youv'e said I feel 55/75 will do)
yeh i couldnt agree more mate. i've come to pretty much the same conclusion. probably goldtip 55\75, keep'em long at first and just play with tip weight. i hope to be shooting off the shelf although i hear talk that samiks are usually set up to shoot off elevated rest and therefore more go out of tiller off the shelf. a coupla years ago i owned a samik talon recurve and yes it came setup with an elevated rest, never thought to try it off the shelf at the time  one thing i noted in the pic at the samik website is that the phoenix (at least in the pic) does not appear to have the screw-hole for mounting a rest. looks more like a shelf shooter. watcha think?
Appears blank, if so set up for shelf, if it is drilled , and you want to shoot shelf, that's ok. Re your comment on tiller, it will be more a case of you shooting split or three under, (assume your aware the bow will probably come tillered for split finger), if you find tiller is a problem, play with the knocking point a bit (may need to go a bit higher than you normally would)
The link is to a thread on this site re shelf shooting, you might find something of interest :)

yep will do axe. still, the hardest part for me now is just waiting for the bloody bow to arrive, and not too sure how long that'll be. might post a new thread now on arras
