View Full Version : arrows for 50lb recurve
hi fellas, just wondering what you guys are shooting outa yer 50 pounders? am mostly interested in the carbon side o things at this point. so far i'm thinkin maybe goldtip 55/75 and leave it long at first and just play around with point weight to find right dynamic spine. whats ya thoughts fellas?
I shoot GT 55-75 at 28.5" with 125 grain tips out of my 55# samick and have no probs. I am currently shooting off a rest but in saying that I am taking that rest off and setting up for off the shelf shooting this week.

Coupla questions.
How much does one of these carbon shafts cost? Including the bits to stick in either end and grommets or whatever they have.
I know the carbons stand up well to shooting at targets but if you treat them really rough how do they stand up?
Currently I buy matched wooden shafts for about 3 dollars each. For practice I shoot broadheads at trees, tussocks, bushes and odd shaped piles of dirt, fenceposts or shiny stones on the ground when I'm out bush. I break or smash heaps of shafts but reuse the broadheads and feathers.
Arrow shafts are definitely the most expensive part of my hunting. Hubris is starting to make his own from ripped billets. I hope to soon be bludging my shafts from him. :D
Mick.
Tracker I make up my own carbon shafts and all up with Woody's hunters on them they cost me $12.50. and take a beating.
I have used one arrow that has been drilled into trees bounced off rocks and still has no damage. :D gotta love that. But they do still come to grief when you don't get a pass through and in this case the goat ran passed a tree and snaped the shaft in two. :x and to top it off I lost the goat   but still recycled the BH, insert and nock so not a total loss.
Out of 12 GT's I got 4 months ago I still have 8 of them and I use them for target as well as hunting. So for me it was a good investment in the carbons.
Not that I don't like woods as I love a nice looking wooden shaft especially when it hits the spot.

I may try and get a few matched up to my woods and see how they compare as to toughness. I'll report back.
Thanks,
Mick.
For what it's worth Tracker, until 3mths ago, I only ever used woods, or very occassionally an aluminium, I'm talking in excess of 20yrs, still have some woods, but believe me they are nowhere near as tough as carbons :D

After a year of trying I can now make a good wood arrow for my bows. But each one is a real investment in time and care. Exploding them on a rock while stump shooting is a bit painful. I'd rather save them for when I see a rabbit.
I will definitely get some shafts from kimall and try them out.
Thanks again.
Mick.
thanx fellas - yeh am thinkin of 55/75 gt's and just working on point wieght till i find a good dynamic spine - think thats the way i'll go at this stage. cheers
Brian:
I think you may be a bit to stiff with the 55/75 and a 50# bow.It will be close so leave them long at first.35/55 or a 500 Easton Epic or Excell is most likely a better choice.
To trim them cut from the fletch end. This way you don't need to be pulling the inserts.
Put the fletches as far forward as possible on 3 arrows with your clamp and then you can cut back as neded to find the right length to use without needing to re fletch each time you cut them.
