View Full Version : Tuning
I have just tuned in my Martin Cougar III. Being the first time I have tried tuning/sighting in a bow, it was very frustrating. I have now got consitently 2" centre groupings at 10', 20, 30 and 40' on the top pin and 50' sighting in on the botton of the top pin. Is this normal? I have not vetured to go further out yet as my neighbour may take offence with a stray arrow going through her living room.

Sounds about right. I have my pins set for 20, 30, 40, 50 & 60 metres. You should be able to use your 20m pin for anything between about 5 to 20m .
It does depend on the speed of your bow to some extent. You may need a pin set for 10 or 15m if your bow is a bit slow.
Hope this helps.
I find that at 5-8mtrs I need to use my 30 pin not my 20 pin. :?:
Been told that arrows actually dip first before levelling seems true.
Wellsy
gaday fella's...all my other bows a 20,30,40.50 metre pin was the go and anything under 20 i shot with my 20m pin...my new bow(a darton typhoon) i have to have 10,20,30,40,50 and if i need a 60 it is just a guess
but i have only been shooting it for a few weeks so i will report back in a while and let you know!!!!
Regards....Sparra
I have been distancing in feet, not metres  That would explain a lot, No wonder 10, 20, 30, 40 are so close.

thursday hopefully
Arrows have a trajectory. They actually fire in an upwards arc and then drop down towards the target. If an arrow dips before it levels, you may have a fletching clearance problem.
arrows definately dip as they leave the bow than level off on their trajectory curve. IMO
Wellsy
I think you will find it seems like they are dipping cause the sights are some inches higher than the arrow so it is not that the arrow has dipped it just has not got up to the level of the sights. Then it goes above the line of the the sights and back down as it gets out closer to the target.I have found after a lot of messing about with the peep position on the string that the closer the peep is to the nock the closer the first pin will be even at 5 mtrs but as you move the peep up the string and resight the pins I have found that if the first pin is spot on at 20 it may shoot a bit high or low at 5 mtrs. This is prob all wrong but I seems to make sence to me.
Cheers KIM
Mine are set at 20, 30, 40, 45, 50 metres, as the close stuff really doesnÃ*t make that much difference on medium sized game.
ItÃ*s the distance over 40 that you really have to be close with the range estimation, a deer say at 45 metres and I use the wrong pin say 40 or 50 will obversely drop under and go completely over at this distance, and I still consider my bow to be very quick with heavy arrows.
See ya Pete.
