View Full Version : Who hunts Sambar
Be interested to know who hunts Sambar and how sucessful you have been.
I have been hunting them for 2 years with the bow and can find them on 80% of my hunts, have got to withing 10m of hinds on numerous occasions but not interested in shooting a hind as they attract the stage.
Have got to within 20m of 3 stags but been unable to draw on 2 occasions and on the third he was to my left so i drew and slowly turned my upper body while drawn, as the pins went from his rear and got to the back of his ribs when he bolted. My time will come

It sounds like you have the same dramas I am having.
I have lost track now of how many times I have been close enough to shoot and things didn't go my way.
I suppose it is just a matter of hanging in there.
Paitents and persistance always pays off
I havnt hunted them yet, but i am super keen to hunt them sometime :D

I have a property that I visit once a year with Sambar on it.
Haven't had a good enough look at the area to say that I actually hunted them.
Will have another go at the area in about a month.

Where I hunt the fallow there is a huge wallow and it gets visits from the sambar and reds that live in the forest. I haven«ÉŸt even considered putting in any real effort to hunt there yet as I just don«ÉŸt know enough about the deer there to make the most of it. I think I will just stick to the fallow for a while longer.

Sambar are the greastest game animal by far.
This is my favourite species to hunt especially when they are in my paddocks!

Thanks, great mount and i like the choice of mount you chose great work
Gidday fellas, I'm hoping to get into the Sambar country mid June and try my luck also, While I read as much as I can on the Sambar there's always a few sneaky tips to be had by those willing to share, if anyone has any advise for a Sambar virgin I'd greatly appreciate it!
Hoyt1, great to see a hind shoulder mount! seen a couple while in New Zealand earlier this year and can't wait to drill one of those sneaky old bags for the wall myself, well done!
See ya,
Cashy.
Great mount that Hoyt1, who did the taxidermy? I am just about to mount the sambar stag i shot last year myself and if it turns out like your hind i'll be stoked!
OK, I hunted the sambar hard last year before i moved up here to Townsville ealrier this year. I managed to get a doe and stag on the ground and hit and lost a couple of others in thick scrub unfortunately.
Basically, sambar are HARD to hunt. Hard to see before they see you, hard to get a shot at, if you do hit one, they are hard to find mostly in thick cover, then they are hard to cape and carry out!! But thats what makes the sambar so good, cause it don't get any better than walking up to a sambar you have just shot. Having said this though, they aren't impossible. I have found them no harder to stalk than say fallow or rusa when you have seen them first.
Cashy, heres my tips. I would suggest that if your going down in June/July that most stags will be rutting. Therefore, they will be leaving the maximum amount of sign on the ground/trees etc. If you will be there for a few days I would spend the first day or two moving along fairly quickly, trying to find a gully where a stag is holding. Look for all the usuals, prints, rubs, wallows, preaching trees and brouse.
Then, once you have located a good area, slow right down. It took me a long time to make myself go slow enough. Use your bino's heaps, and if you get to a nice looking gully or creek crossing then sit and wait for 15 minutes. Most of the sambar I saw were when I was sitting down. If they don't know your there they will make a fair bit of noise when they move through the bush and more times than not it will be a sound that alerts you to ones prescence.
Other than that I would say that if it's raining, get out there cause this is the best time. And don't wait for the perfect shot angle, cause chances are, you won't get it. As soon as you think you can make a killing shot, take it. Remember, these suckers are BIG, and so a 50 metre shot should be on the cards. Anyway, better shut up, have just about written a novel!!
hey Southy,
the taxidermy was done by Ian Humphries of Bright, i was very happy with the mount. and with all of the other heads in his shed he is very popular. good luck with the mount. :D
thats a great mount hoyt1 :D
