View Full Version : Unluckiest Feral Animal

I have just returned to the hunting scene after a 15 year lay-off.

I am re-calling probably the unluckiest pig that lived.

The story goes...

I had never been pig hunting before, actaully, I was a bow hunting newbie and my only kill was a mixoed wabbit at about 3.5 meters a month before. I was given the opportunity to hunt a property out near Dirranbandi. I jumped at it  . Anyway, I had asked heaps of questions about arrowing pigs, how long before they topple? Do you kill them straight away with an arrow etc, etc. The answers were "NO, pigs do not die immediately, no animals bow shot normally do"

So, here I am in the middle of no-where, bow in hand and broad heads ready..I sight my first pig...heart starts thumping...let me tell you, there is no greater feeling.

I stalk in on the pig, a sow, and take aim. :P My best mate is in the bushes next to me still trying to figure the strange whistle I had given him (hell, I was nervous and my " I've spotted game " whistle came out like a wet fart  ). O.K, I take aim..SWOOSH... arrow goes clean over the pig...

I stay still, actually I am frozen and my heart is thumping more than ever...

The pig stops..gives me that funny side ways stare...and goes back to eating. You beauty, I get a second chance!! :D

I nock my next arrow, by this time a couple of other pigs have turned up, I can't believe it, this is heaven..I take aim...I let the arrow loose..SWOOSH... straight past the pig I was aiming at...AGAIN!!! :(

However, to my surprise :o , My arrow, the one I just shot, is suspended in mid-air behind the pig I just missed??!!

Now, you can believe this or not but I swear it is true. My arrow landed fair and square between the eyes of one of the others pigs that had turned up. The pig I hit, stood dead still with the ribtec buried in it's skull, (what seemed an eternity was only about 10 seconds) it then toppledl over, stone cold dead, with all of its legs stiff , an arrow sticking straight out of its forehead and that is how it stayed!.

My mate couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it!

Every one had told me pigs don't die straight away and yet I had killed my first pig, a pig that I wasn't even aiming at and it didn't move an inch after being shot.

It was like hitting a 3d pig target and having the target fall over.

My aim is much better now and I doubt this will ever happen again.

Any one out there with an unlucky feral story that they may wish to add?.

That's a good story Shano, I would have liked to have seen that shot, strange things happen. I shot a pig in a water hole once in Central Queensland, the arrow had gone straight through the pig, after the pig ran off I went to retrive my arrow and follow the pig up when I noticed my arrow out in the middle of the water hole, the arrow had struck a very large cane toad and he was off to somewhere better with my arrow still in him, I had to go for a swim to get the arrow and cane toad...Glenn...

No pics with the arrow out of its forehead Frisky. The person who I accredit for teaching me to hunt told me not to take pictures of so I didn't.

Although, in retrospect, I probably should have given the shot.

That by the way was the only pig I got for the trip, my friend got none and the person who took us to his property got 9 boars I think, he was good!

Cheers

I've mentioned this earlier in the year when I first joined the site. I too have shot a deer in the head as it it lowered its head for a drink and intercepted the arrow that was aimed at its chest. That deer dropped dead on the spot and recovery was easy. I have photos of it but they are not allowed up on the site for obvious reasons.

G'day fella's, A few years back I shot a fox in the head in a strong wind. The arrow was sailing perfectly for his ribcage, but in the last few seconds of flight a big gust of wind grabbed the arrow and it planted him right between the eye's. Just like he had been shot with a rifle and it dropped him like a suit case. I reckon this bloke was damn unlucky!
Thats a good yarn shano! Scott

About 10 metres away and surrounded by Lignum bush. I was bare bowing at the time, an easy shot in anyones book but not for me on my first pig outing.

That rush of adrenaline certainly took it's effect on my shooting.

Send the pictures to my email mate and I can retouch them for you if you like and then you can post them here.

I'm sure we all would like to see them.

shano, on my seccond goat hunt i found an unluckier billy than your pig..

I was stalking a mob that was bedded down on a ridge and as i got to 20m i drew back and aimed on a billy right on top of the ridge. ( i was young and diddnt think about where my arrow would end up if missed or passthrough) I was shaking like hell and put the arrow clean over the top by about 2 foot and it dissapeared over the ridge. The goat diddnt even flinch so i nocked an arrow and smashed him the seccond time and he jogged over the ridge in the direction my arrow went.

I went jogging up over the ridge to see two goats fall over next to each other. Confused i inspected and saw my first arrow had struck a goat about 100m away on the other side of the ridge right behind the shoulder getting half an arrows penetration. There was a whole mob all feeding on the other side of the ridge and i was just lucky it hit it in the ribs not in the arse.

G`day guys,First of all I would like to say what a fantastic web site this is.I have gone from not knowing anything about archery to sucessfully setting up a hunting bow and harvesting two fallow deer in only a couple of months.I consider my second deer to be unlucky as I misjudged the distance on a quartering away shot only to find that the arrow went in between the ears and out between the eyes  To my amazement a huge buck came running up for a look and a sniff and needless to say didnt hang around long enough for me to noc an arrow. I now have meat in the freezer and two loverly skins thanks to your "how to " section. :D

Thanks for the kind words fellow hunters

I have been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time as I have a brother who has had a bow for a couple of years for only a few rabbits. As I say to him,the bigger they are,the easier they are to hit

I have some photos but I am also a beginner on the computer and haven`t worked out how to send them yet.The expert has gone to town for a week.

As for a junior PeterM, I`m probably old enough to be his uncle but I did take lots of notice of his equipment and his advice to others.

Regards Stephen.
