finley is a small town of 2000people 20kms north of the vic border and 150 km due west from albury/wodonga. assistance towards knowing regulations of area size needed for a achery range, affiliation, laws , licenses, age requirements, competition info, grants and all other infomation needed for making the first steps towards starting a succesful club. I am a member of the local hunting and clay target club, also registered tester with the n.s.w. game council. i have already made some inquiries as to some usable land for the purpose of achery but need more details before i can pursue them. have had alot of interest from the local schools( high school 550 pupils(primary x2- 450pupils)) and seeing the interest and sales through the local sports store has given myself and others the reason to pursue another outlet for our youth with out the headaches of firearm licensing, laws and rules. Any help and assistance would be greatly appreciated. i can be contacted through this site, at my email onlyrecoil67@yahoo.com or phone 0429813207 thank you.

G'Day 220. I am a member of Twin City Bowmen in Albury and have been on the commity for a number of years. Firstly, you need insurance, even if you have no members or club grounds, reason being, if you take membership monies from people, someone has to be responsible for any injuries that may occur thru' working bee accidents during the set up of your course, we have private insurance through (sorry) I believe SSAA, should you approach your gun club with a proposal, they may let you coexist under the one heading ie: Finley Gun & Archery Club. It may be benificial to both of you. Our club is completely independant and self sufficient (no we cannot hold ABA or AAA3D events) and have been so for 30 years. Last year our public liability insurance cost us arround $1800, that covers us for up to 100 shooters, twice monthly for 12 months. We have our own targets drawn up like life-like Aussie ferals ranging from group 1 targets right up to group 5s. Should you like to purchase some targets from us we are quite happy to supply you, just PM me.
Good luck with your endevours :D .

mate i was one of a few founding members of gold coasts hinterland field archer sclose to 15 odd years ago

we were originally aba for many many years.
we started with nothing.

lets just say without bashing them,we went and jioned 3daaa approx 3 odd years ago..

the club now has a great club house all the extras,we own over 50 3d targets, have close to 20grand in the bank and tipped the membership over 200.

and i can pass on numerous clubs with the same story
when we were with aba, theybasically take most of ur shoot money ..

i believe most ppl rather shoot 3d targets anyday over paper

aba has a good hunting profiency etc and if they moved with the times, would be a great association again

now this is not a aba bash, its facts,so anyone who has issues with anything i said, feel free to pm me... :)

G'day,

I am going through the same process at the moment starting a club in sutherland, south sydney.

Being that you have a bit of land ear marked its probably best to fit the style of archery to that. Ie if its clear land you might want to set up an olymic style range. Or if its uncleared set it up as a field or 3D course.

If you affiiate yourself with a archery body (AA, ABA, 3DAAA) They may help you out with a start up pack of goodies. Targets, rule books, constitutions, etc. Also they cover you insurance wise. Or at least they say they do. You may even consider seting it up directly under there control so you dont have to do as much paper work and running around.

Mind you, you can also be a nonaffiliate club, a bussiness or a NPO. It just depends on what you want to do and dont want to do in view of what cirrcumstance permit.

If you have a few kilometers you could do compound clout  , 250m will do you for recurve clout and 90m olympic range. Otherwise field targets dont seem to be over 50m. Consider saftey, signs, fences, etc.

Goodluck and let us know how you fair.

I'm pretty sure the pcyc can be a big help in grounds, insurance, etc.
Might be worth calling them if there in your area.

please explain compound clout and any other forms of competition/is there a site for these?

Sure I'll do my best, I aint no expert though.

Archery Australia(AA) play clout I think, it might be on there site or one of the clubs affiliated with them.

Clout is the type of archery that was used in combat by ranks of archers on ramparts and fromed up on the field, firing lob shots up in the air to land upon an enemy army in the good old days.

Today it is practised as a sport, all be it in somewhat dwindaling numbers. Particularly by traditional enthusiasts using replica traditional equipment. However clout need not be limited to traditional bows, indeed modern recurves and compound bows may be also be used.

Firstly groups of like shooters are mustered...
Seniors/juniors, male/female, barebow/sighted, compound/recurve, etc.

Females and juniors shooting bare bow shoot at a range of 145m at a target of a white wooden flag on a stake in the ground accompanied by 2 other white stakes ~2m to the leftx1 & rightx1 over a cleared field.
Senior male recurve with sights shoot at 185m at the same target.

I am not sure of compound clout ranges as the distance to practice it is not within the boundries of most club. A 70lb aggressive camed compound bow with lite target arrows in it is going to lob arrows a long way 2,000m maybe. So be very careful if your going to try it. AA or someone do have a clout rule book. I'll try and get a hold of one or some info from it.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, theres heaps more to it but I dont want to bore you. Its heaps of fun and quite challenging, I hope you get into it and have a ball.

Cheers.

Some of the styles are...

Olympic. On a flat clear field with big colourful round targets of given distances 20m-90m.

Field. A gorup of archers walk through trails with cardboard B&W animal targets of diffrent size or butts with small dots (~50mm) at undisclosed ranges.

3D. Like field but with replica foam animals.

Then there are diffrent games and classes within each style to suit the diffrent archers.

HTH.
