Hey all Question........
What is the best shaft material to use these days .......
A} Aluminum
B} Fibreglass
C} Carbon & Aluminum
D} Carbon only
As im only new to the sport i would really like to now what everyone really does prefer as i have no idea, at the moment im using Gold stalker 2219 made in USA but they bend so easly.
So any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Wabs,
I can't speak for anyone else, but i have a hunch that if we were to do a poll, the vast majority would shoot carbons these days. They don't bend, they have got a lot cheaper in the last few years, and their straightness and accuracy and overall toughness make them an ideal hunting shaft.
It also depends on your type of hunting. Most guys who go trad seem to prefer good quality timber shafts. They must like making up a lot of arrows, as timber shafts have a habit of smashing on impact with whatever is behind your intended target. It depends whether you are into aesthetics or practicality.

P.S. I shoot GoldTip carbons, the unlabelled ones from Archery Mart in Adelaide, and i have never had a problem with them. I have at one time accidentally shot a brick, and having removed the head and checked the shaft (must do) was able to screw another head on and keep shooting. The carbon shaft just paid for itself.

Majority of shafts shot these days are Carbon. I personally shoot Alloy/Carbon and like these.

Wabs,

You spoke for me, except that I shoot carbons from Ned Kelly (my recurve). Can't go wrong with them, I can't think of a reason to go back to alloys.

I shoot weighted carbons for my recurve and carbon shafts for my Outback compound.
As the others have said they are either broken or shooting, aluminiums on the other hand bend too easily and loose their accuracy while woods are great if you can make them yourself out of a readily available source of wood as they break easily.
All modern carbon shafts, as long as they are matched to your setup, are good.

I find that I'm using carbon more and more these days. I use Goldtips and I can't complain about the performance. The best thing in my mind about carbons, apart from being extremely consistant and forgiving, is that they are either perfectly straight or broken. They're very tough too and will take hits on rocks, etc, that would break or bend other shaft material.
From your handle, I take it you like to hunt bunnies. Carbon arrows are ideal for this, but if you hunt in an area where there's loads of rock or thick undergrowth such as gorse or blackberries, you might be better off using timber arrows as they are considerably cheaper and it won't break the bank if you loose or break a few. There's absolutely nothing wrong with timber arrows. I've used them almost exclusively for 35 years and although they may be a little harder to keep straight and to match with your bow and draw-length as far as spine is concerned, their beauty and romance make them well worth persisting with.
