Gday guys,
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the check mate line of take down recurve bows. They look great to me and there workmanship seems up too scratch as well. Looks like there are no problems getting them deliverd to Australia from the states quite cheap. I was looking at this bow or the martin hunter. Any views would be welcome.
Thanks in advance for any views.
Regards,
Bowtown

I have had a 60" 56# at 28" TD Hunter type 1 for the last 8 years, its a great bow shots good groups when I do and has accounted for a fair bit of game (stinkis and fox's) as well. Seem to handle the nocks and scrapes of hunting well with a few nicks and scratches here and there.

I picked it up and flung a few arrows for the fist time in couple of years this last weekend and hit the target where i wanted.....

cheers

Bowtown I have never shot a Checkmate bow but they do have a very good reputation. Checkmate make bow on contract for some custom bowyers in the States. The Martin Hunter has been around since the 1960's, a lot of game has been shot in Australia with the Hunter, the Hunter and the Ventura were once the popular recurves in Australia. I don't think you could go wrong with either bow, just depends if you want a TD or one piece, the Checkmates are great value as far as a TD recurve is concerned...Glenn...

You won't hear a bad word about Chekmate bows. I own a Chekmate "Atilla" and I'm more than happy with it. I can honestly recommend them. In fact, I've ordered another Chekmate, a Hunter T/D. The 6 months are almost up and I'm really looking forward to getting it.

I also own a Martin "Savannah", it's a great bow too. You won't be disappointed which ever way you go.

G'day bowtown. This is 'Ned Kelly'- a CheckMate Hunter II, 62" 52#@28". Black locust limbs with bubinga/black walnut riser. Hair rest, flemish string and cat whiskers as supplied.
CM bows: Chad from Checkmate bows lived up to his reputation for patient, complete, no-nonsense answers to any questions. Also, he is a snappy reply-emailer. The order was processed and bow shipped very quickly. I did not custom-order the bow, instead selecting it to suit my requirements from a few rigs that were in-stock.
Shooting- first impressions: The first thing I noticed was how smooth it was to draw at my 29" draw length. (As measured by my bow-scale) the 55#@29" feels a lot less. Although it still needs some fine-tuning, it shoots very quietly and with little hand-shock. I had no trouble with the bow 'kicking' on release even though I'm still in the initial stages of learning to shoot this bow.
UPDATE: I wrote the above the week I received the bow. The only 'complaint' I have found in the weeks since then are some "minor" imperfections in the limbs. I'm still waiting from CheckMate for an answer on how/will this matter be resolved.

Thank you too all who replied. i think you guys are right on the money with all of your comments. Chad from check mate is a pleasure too deal with. He seems very smart when it comes to answering any questions. There is so much research material out there to read on recureves. So far i have come up with the checkmate and the martin hunter. Just have to make a choice.
Kind regards,
Bowtown
