I'd say nearly all of us wear some sort of a hat when bowhunting. You need a hat to shade your eyes and protect you from the deadly effects of too much sun. Down my way at this time of the year, you need a hat to keep your noggin warm.
Personally I like to wear a full brimmed hat in the summer months for protection from the sun and a baseball cap in the cooler months. Finding a baseball cap or a brimmed hat with a short brim is a necessity for traditional archers to avoid making contact with the bill at full draw. Compound shooters with their very short bows don't usually have this problem.
I wear a "Huntec" canvas brimmed hat in "Advantage Wetlands" in the summer months. I find this camo blends in well with dried out vegetation, it doens't get too hot to wear either. Sometimes I'll wear my Akubra felt hat (its a Squatter), particularly if there's much of a chance I'll be wearing it in public (I don't like wearing camo in public). I like to wear a "cut down" woolen baseball cap in the winter months. The brim has been shortened to allow for string clearance. The good thing about baseball caps in winter is, they don't tend to blow off your head when it's windy, plus you can wear the hood of your rain jacket over the top of the cap. I've got a plain olive green cap, plus another "cut down" Huntec camo cap to choose from.
I'm curious about the choices that other bowhunters have made regarding the ideal hat to wear. You never know, we might all learn something.
What's your choice of hat, and what attributes does this hat have that makes it ideal for you?
