Sleeping bag ratings

Ok...so those on here who've spent a few nights with me on a winter's hunt know I'm a very cold frog when I hit the swag...

I'm keen to get a new sleeping bag that will keep me nice and toasty so I have been looking around.

My question is: what do the ratings these days mean?

1 rating I see is the comfort rating and the other is the extreme rating (usually in degrees celsius). Does anyone know for sure what these mean?

I can guess for myself given the names they have but am wondering if there's anyoe a bit "in the know" with regards to these?

The first number is for seasons, ie 1 is summer and a 4 season bag is a winter bag, as in you can use it all 4 seasons. The degrees is how cold it is rated to and remain comfortable.

I used a 0C when in the territory, but here I use a -10c. If its warm you can get out of it, but when its cold it'll keep you warm.Although large quantities of port etc will also help.

Luke all I can say is get a good "Goose Down" sleeping bag and you will be set for life. :lol:

do yourself a favor Luke, check out the stoney creek black stag bags
they are awesome, and much cheaper that similar quality in other bags

What do people think of the "fairy down" sleeping bags?

i have an outer limits traveller 302 and it is rated at -5 and it is warm if you are sleeping in a swag/matress, but if you are sleeping on a camp stretcher you will need a thin foam matress under you to stop the cool air freezing you at night.
it was achristmas present so i am not sure what it cost, hope this helps luke.

Fairydown make very good stuff Luke.
I have had a fairydown fleece jacket for nearly 12 years and it is still better than some of my newer jackets. Really good gear.
