View Full Version : Slow Bow
I have a spreadsheet which tells you how fast your bow goes in fps and mine seems to be quite slow.
Here's my setup:
Fred Bear Buckmaster G2 @ 60lbs with 28" draw
IBO rating is 305
Shaft length is 29"
Gold Tip Terminators (8.2gpi)
3 vanes, 7.5g each
125g Outback Hunter
Insert weight, 5g
Nock Weight, 10g
If someone can put this through a machine and tell me what comes up on theirs. At the moment my arrows weight 405.3g which is probably considered light and my fps is a mere 237.4.
Thanks
JP
mere
Compared to what bows used to be mate, it's hardly "mere".
Also, do you actually realise how fast that is?
That's about 70m's per second
If it hits where you want it to and brings the animal down quickly then why bother with how fast or slow it is? I'm sure you'll get ample penno with this set up as is mate ;)
Luke :P
well there are a lot of guys that get 270 or 280 fps and that seems fast! 237fps just doesn't sound that flash. but i guess when it comes to crunch time it will probably get the job done. do you think my arrows are too light, cos in one of your posts Luke you said that you thought that 470g were a bit light.
cheers
JP
Depends on what you're hunting JP.
For a large boar, 400 gr or so is verging on light...yes. (IMO)
But for goats or other "light skinned" game, it should do the job.
Luke
the hunting i'm doing is mainly goats, foxes, rabbits and possibly some deer in the near future. would 400g be enough for these types of game?
thanks Luke
JP
Goats, foxes, and rabbits for sure...deer I can't comment as I have not taken one myself yet, but IMO from the amounts of hunting I've done on the other game I think you'd be right.
Perhaps some of the other boys would be able to lend comment here?
Luke

No personal offense mate, but typical compound/bells and whistles type comment........... I have never shot wheel bows, but I'm sure your going well fast enough.
Tradjectory, now there's something that can be important (especially when you are trying to ssttrreettcchh out those shots)
Fast is fast mate. I havn't grassed a deer yet either, but I'm damn sure that you'll kill just about anything if you shoot it right. :D
My old Alpine shot at about 190fps, yep it was slow but it was quiet, it help me take a lot of game, rabbits, hares, foxes, goats, pigs. I knew the bows, and my capabilities, speed dosn't mean much if you cant shoot straight, just means the arrow will miss the target a little bit quicker.

I'd agree with the others. The set up you've described produces kinetic energy of 50 Ft/Lb which should be sufficient to penetrate the game you've described.
In terms of pigs, you might be a light on. That being said, I've seen people successfully harvest pigs with comparably performing setups.
If you're concerned about penetration, you might want to try heavier arrows, as weight is more critical than speed in producing KE.
Good luck

Where did you get the spredsheet from?
ok guys thanks a lot. i read about light arrows going faster but not as much penetration. i have always wanted a fast bow but i guess i was slightly wrong! :P
the spreadsheet was from Ken Porter, i forgot what his username was.
thanks everyone

That be me!
Jp with a draw of 28" you will have problems getting high speeds ( I have only 27" but shoot a hunting bow with an IBO rating of 325 fps to compensate)
While speed is nice to brag about, good form is required to control it :D But accuracy is what is required. I would rather punch him behind the shoulder @ 237 fps than hit him in the arse @ 300 fps :D
Cheers

Very well said, I agree.
I also shoot a fast bow to try and compensate for my short 25 1/2" draw.
Bill
thanks for you help guys.

Howling dog any chance of sending a copy of the spredsheet to me? would appreciate it!

mate, my martin phantom was 216 fps and i took alot of stuff with that bow it served me well, dont worry about how fast it is try to get as quite as you can. jerry
thanks jerry. what other things apart from damperners, string silencers and stabilzers make the bow quieter?
Also that spreadsheet that Ken has is very accurate and easy to use :D

Well this may be stating the obvious but having a perfectly tuned bow is half the battle to having a quiet bow.
Bill
yeh might have to read up on the easton tuning guide as i have no idea how to tune mine at all or where to start to begin.
thanks
JP
hey mate, depending on what deer you are planning to hunt but for fallow 400gn would be alright if you hit it behind the shoulder. Hitting the shoulder it might not get much penetration.
Goats i have had heaps of experiance with and my old bear bow took 30 odd goats with it and that was useing mechanicals. But in saying that i did loose a couple with poor penetration from hitting the shoulder.
The main thing is to get your bow and arrows tuned and a good 2 blade head will never fail you with penetration. Oh yeah and accuracy is vital.

I just got a copy of the spreadsheet from Ken (thanks by the way) just wondering what you would put in for draw length as I known there are different ways it is measured?
i put the draw length which is on my bow.
JP
Is there any websites or programs that anyone has that tells you how much kinetic energy you bow is putting out as i would like to know how much it would be for 500g+ arrows.
Go and get some field experience. :D Sure, you should have everything right, broadheads shaving sharp etc, but fps, kinetic energy, penetration...blah blah blah, you'll know once you hunt some stuff 8)
I have killed goats (I know, not the hardest of all animals  ) with a 50# recurve, a 60# recurve, a 73# longbow...... end result was exactly the same 8)
