View Full Version : Medium rare or Burnt to a crisp????? pics added
Well I had the frieght of my life yesterday when I was heading back to the office at lunch time.
I could smell petrol in the car, pulled over to check it out. Couldn't see any leaks or loose fittings. So got back into the car and started it, put the seat belt on, handbreak off, check for cars indicate then as I was about to leave the curb side I could see smoke coming out of the left hand side of the bonnet. 2 seconds later flames  at that point It was exit stage right turned the car off jumped out and quickly grabed what I could in two hands (laptop phones and ME)
did the 100m dash away from the car, turned around and it was game over for the Beamer. Got straight on the phone dialed 000. 3
minutes later a guy pulled up in a 4x4 pulled out the tiniest fire extingusher I have ever seen in my life and procedded to hand it to me. I kindly told him that I wasn't crazy enough to go and get in the car pop the bonnet and lift it up. Then had a council worker pull up and offer me a more realistic sized fire extinguisher, but as he was about to get it out of his truck things started to go pop and bang under the bonnet so he said Ahhhh NO WAY she can burn. By the time the Metro fire department got there it was well and truely cooking. A few mintues later flames were out and the reality of what had just happened set in. Then about 3-4 minutes after the fire was out the CFS brigade rocked up :? sorry guys the BBQ is finshed
So the entire front end of the beamer was toast. Total write off now.
I took some pics after the fire was out on my mobile phone so will post some pics soon.
But I was ok just in shock, and left thanking God that my daughter/wife wasn't in the car with me.
So I'm now just waiting to sort out the insurance side of it then I'll go shopping for a new rig. Might see if I can get a small 4x4 this time.

Good thing you pulled over hey, would have had a real situation on your hands if you had have been fanning the flames with 80kph winds
good to see you got out of it safe too :)
Good to see your safe Hood, doesn't take long for fire to get hold of a car.

That's alot of bad luck and good luck all rolled into one. I reckon you've earned a few days off to hunt and get head back together. Sorry to hear about the car but good to hear no one was hurt.

Now THATS a picture I want to see. :D If she is anything like my wife she would say " Why should I take the bus? It was your car that burned". I would definatly be using the public transportation system.

Nah the wife doesn't have a choice as I'm out and about most days for work. Besides if she needs to go anywhere I usually drop her there and then she gets the bus home.
Bloody hell mate! What a bugger. She's deffinately toasted. Glad to hear your ok.. And yes thank god the wife and young'n were not there.
Lucky you are ok, it could've been a lot worse.

Is there any chance they may find out what started it? Or is there not enough left?

With how badly everything got burnt I doubt it very much. But they have assumed it was a fuel leak (as I had smelt fuel just before) somewhere on the left side of the engine bay and something to do with the electrics. As both the fuel injection system and fues box were on the left and next to each other. As to is (was) the fuel pump and battery.
So take you pick as to what went wrong, either way it's toast now.
Which in some ways really pisses me off as I was part way through doing the car up. As you can see in the second pick on the door I had cut out all rust from the car and bogged it up ready to be resprayed. And had spent heaps of time getting spare parts for it like the bumper strips on the doors (still in my shed) new tail lights (still in the shed) new fuel injectors (still in the shed)....................
So yeah I'm annoyed BUT (there's always a big but somewhere  ) it now gives me a chance to get a hunting rig.
I am still going back over the day wondering if there was something I missed when looking under the bonnet, But I know that I checked everything twice. I to would like to know exactly how it started, again BUT I guess I'll never know now.
FOR SALE
1979 BMW 323i
this car is a ripper, it's smoken on the road, a red hot street car. Perfect for burning down to the shops for a BBQ chicken.
More fuel efficent then your gas cooktop. If this car was an oven tea would be done in a fraction of the time.
Has thermo fan for that bit of extra fan forced action.
Only for seriouse drivers as it's to hot to handle by any amiture tyre fryer.
Make me an offer 8)
$5???      hehe

bugger!!!! what a way for it to go up,
dont the fuel lines run across the top of the block or close to the manifolds, my friends E30 had a similar thing happen but it was the fuel leak onto the hot manifold.

That they did, and the fuel lines from the top of the fuel injection unit to the cylinders are all plastic. The fire brigade said that it looked like the fire started at or near the fuel injection unit and the fuse box (rats nest) as thats where the major damage was.
As much as I like the look of the e21, e30's I ain't getting another.
Still waiting on payout :x

Crikey Hood!!!
Glad you walked away from that one.
Let us know how you get on with the insurance mate.
Cheers Noel
maybe sumone did it on purpose... because you can do that. get the headlights wires, strip them, get a screw driver, poke a hole in the rubber fuel tube and put the wires in...when you turn the headlights on, spark, and up it goes... hehe but then again why would you need to turn the headlights on during the day??? hehe, so how bout that FIVE DOLLARS :P
D'Elia
Mate can't believe you did that to your car ... what some people will do to claim on insurance.......
Just jokes mate, glad you are ok. Just goes to show you what can happen.
Well got some good news at last.
Finaly got the choque in the mail today so will be shopping for a car on the weekend. Yippeeeee
You don't realise how much you rely on having two cars until your back to just one. The wife is more excited about getting another car then me, but only just. As she has had to catch the bus everywhere. And with an energetic one year old, that can be a task and a half.
Just hope that I can find the right car at the right price.
Let the fun begin.
The car catching on fire was the worst thing that could have happened at the time as I had just started to do the thing up. Was almost ready for the re-spray. I'm just glad that I hadn't forked out the $$$$ for the spray job as it would have hurt even more then.
The only good thing to come out of this situation is that now I can get something a little more practical for work as well as camping and hunting.
I think the first thing I'll be checking for is fuel leaks
Damn, certainly good to hear no-ones hurt and your okay. Cars are alo9t easier to replace than people. lol I've heard of really hot cars before but thats going a little to far.

How about the Ferocious Ford? Or the always popular Mighty Mazda?
Theres also the Horrendous Holden.
Bill
Or why not jsut a Ferocious Feroza
:D Well I am a happy hunter now. I have bought my new rig. :D
I pick it up at the end of the week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/NotquiteRHood/ROZA2.jpg
Can't wait to pick it up.
has power everything, 6 stack CD plus CD head unit, spotties, towbar blah blah blah blah..............................
The only thing wrong with it is that there are two small dents on the back left side that look like someone has pushed a little to hard with their fingers you are hard pressed to see them if you didn't know they were there.
So I'm very happy with my find as every thing else in it's price range didn't even come close to being in as good a condition as this baby.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
