View Full Version : Peeping?

Hi guys,
I need some advice from those a bit more experienced than i.
I have the old "3-slot" peep that always manages to leave one third of the string in the way, and having looked at a friends bow, i really liked how open his sight picture was with a cable-aligning peep sight.

Any advice on which ones to go for, and what size? I have never used one and can't get to a shop to look. Also, to which cable do you clip the tubing? I want to have my sight picture a bit less "busy". I have shot with both eyes open, even though i am left eye dominant and right-handed, because there is so much in my right eye's sight picture that i need the left one to help it. But practicing lately on my new broadhead butt (Thanks to Mick Koster, review to follow in a few days) I am feeling a lot more stable just shooting with my left eye shut, and would like to make things easier for my right eye.

I didn't explain that very well, but that's my reasoning. Any advice?

Puk.

P.S. Do any blonde schoolteacher moderators sell any of that tubing stuff to use with your peep?

Hi Puk,

Just attach it to the cable closest to the string. If you get the plain plastic one (fine line zero, sta-brite or pick-a-peep $14-16 + postage from Archery Mart) you can drill the opening out so that it lines up with your sight housing better.

Hey Puk,

I feel your pain with the 3-slot peeps, pain in the arse i rekon.

Hearing that you are left eye dominant i am a bit surprised that you are shooting right handed. I am left handed but right eye dominant, and when i started in archery i shot left handed (as you do being left handed!!). I couldnt hit the side of a barn, but when i worked out that i was right eye dominant and tried shooting right handed i shot heaps better - it took a bit of getting used to but well worth the effort IMO. Have you ever tried shooting left handed? how do you shoot a riffle? You may be able to get away with shooting right handed with a compound when you shut one eye - but i rekon you will have all sorts of troubles if you want to shoot both eyes open with trad gear ( i shoot both eyes open with compound and sights).
I'm no expert, but if you can get you hands on a left handed bow i rekon you may just surprise yourself.

Now for peeps - i rekon any of them on the market are be fine. If they have the adjustable size parts then throw them out - you need the hole as big as you can (within reason) to let in as much light as possible in low light situations.

Thanks Maxy,
Yeah, i realised too late what a pain it was being cross-dominant and shooting the other way.

I know of a lot of guys who are also cross-dominant, and shoot quite well with one eye shut. I think i will stick with it, because i am happy with the way my rig is shooting over-all, i just want to "de-clutter" my sight picture. I did have a bit of trouble with trad, and may have to address this in future, if i ever go back. But for now, i would rather hit what i aim at.

G`day puk

I had much the same problem with string rotations and all that other stuff that goes on with peeps that I turfed em all away and bought a Timberline "no peep" from the states. The no-peep has increased my enjoyment of bowhunting no end by eliminating peep problems and improving my form. It mightn`t be for everyone but give it a look anyway. Just my 2c.

Check out their website http://www.timberline-archery.com/np.asp

Cheers Steve.

Tried one Steve,
Couldn't get it to mount real well on my particular bow, it moved between shots, and left me with no confidence that my arrow was going to be in the same ball-park as where i aimed.
I went back to a peep. Now i just want a better one.

Thanks for the idea though,

Puk

Puk,
I use a fletcher true peep ($5-6).
Just divide your string strands equally and adjust by moving one strand one each side until it lines up at full draw.
With good strings and cable it won't move.
I've got the largest aperture I could find and drilled it out until it the sight ring was just inside the peep at full draw(for me it was about 1/4").

Works well for me

I have a star brite peep and its not too bad. Seems to move after every few shots but it is quite good. If i drill a larger hole i reckon it'll be top notch.

Tru peep with a loop, is my recommendation, unless you shoot fingers.

I have a true peep and love it.

I use a Tru Peep as well.

Once you have set it in the string, as Wellsy suggested, it doesn't move.

Get the smallest aperture size then drill it to suit your sight housing.

After drilling just blacken the exposed aluminium with a Texta otherwise the glow, from reflected sunlight on the exposed metal, can cause blurring.

Do tru peeps work at all with fingers or do they still roll out of place because of the way fingers hold the string? or were you only referring to the loop?
I shoot fingers and I've got a 3 slot peep. It's generally ok but sometimes it lines up wrong and really bugs me. For $6, if they do work with fingers, I might try one.
