You won’t need a super powerful UHF for the flat country so you can probably find a Uniden or GME 1 watt for about $100-150. You could go 2 watt and pay a bit more, or 5 watt and pat $500 (or there about). To call your hunting mates you only need a couple of K’s range so the smaller units will do the job.

The GPS will depend on what you want to do with it when you aren’t hunting the cape, and the range of models is vast.
For just tracking your movements, and marking places of interest you can get by with a small etrex or one of the older Magellan meridians. If you want to be able to manage waypoints and tracks on your PC you need to buy a unit that has a PC cable plug. The low end Magellans in the new series (100, 200, 300) don’t have them.

Do your research and then hit the Cashconverters first

Johnnie Appleseed is a good place for Garmin GPSr’s

Only one person in your group needs to carry a more powerful UHF. The rest of you can get by perfectly well with 1 watt units.
The unit you already have will work great for hunting.

And FWIW, I wouldn’t spend any money at all on some home brand radio. If you are buying more watts because you think it is going to help in an emergency you need to be sure the unit you buy will work when you want it. The only brands that are well proven in Aus are GME, Uniden and Motorola.

The Uniden 205 is a great unit and its both a GPS and UHF.
http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_gps205_index.asp
**** Smith sells them.
Or you can go to http://www.prestigecom.net.au/ I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of gear off these people over the last few years always been spot on for comes and most of the time the Price you see includes shipping which will surprise the life out of you when it turns up sometimes the next day  ( From WA Mind you)
You can buy the TX6200 GME electrophone on ebay for $349.00 which s great buying.

I have honestly had heaps of UHF handhelds over the years and the best ones have been the GMEs. the TX630 is most likly the best UHF for short range use I have ever used works faultlessly.

GPS's changed so bloody much I have given up on which is which now after years of using Garmins I have swapped to Magellan's very simple to use units, the newer Garmin GPS60 is a great GPS to use also, had a play with one for a week a while ago.

Bottom line is what you want to Spend I guess for my money I love the TX6200 and the Magellan Explorist 600 .

But please don't forget the Compass :)

Jeffro PM sent!! also from my experience.. 1 watt is generally good for about 1 klm 2 watts 2 klm etc... this also depends on the terrain..as hilly terrian will cut it back even further..

I recently bought a Garmin Etrex which seems to do the job very nicely. Easy to use and compact. They're on ebay for around $190 posted.

I am glad you are happy RK. The new model Garmins have a new chipset in them and people are really impressed with the performance but the price you pay reflects to newness of the technology and for 90 percent of GPS users it is money better spent elsewhere.

Anybody else after a Garmin E-trex, if you buy on the net it is buyer beware and don't pay (on the net) any more than $170

I got a Garmin Etrex that was one year old and not a scratch on it, on ebay from the states for $110 including postage. Gotta be happy with that. Oh yeah, and a Bushnell yardage pro sport rangefinder for $110 delivered as well.(normally $250-ish) I love Ebay. My wife hates it.

Id look at the more powerfull 5 watt UHF for up here as in some spots heavy timbered country actually soaks up the radio waves yes the country is flat in spots but ive hunted quite a bit of country where you are flat getting a kilometre out of the UHF in my vehicle and Ive got a big aerial

Never Trust Salespeople, after all their job is to sell you something, the more expensive it is the more commission they get.

I have the eTrex Camo and it is a little champion.

The comment about it being no good in the bush is BS.

I have taken mine into thick bush in the Snowy mountains and it still goes strong.

I even get good signal in my lounge room with all the curtains closed, buggered if I know how it does it.

Go the eTrex
