View Full Version : Spelling
OK fella's....Over the past few months I have noticed that the spelling on this site is slowly getting worse. Now I don't know if it is the SMS mentality
or some of you really can't spell but it's driving me nuts.
I have tried to read some posts in here and have had trouble making out what the writer is trying to say....WHATS GOING ON????? I'm not perfect and I am not having a go at any one in particular but basic spelling is one of those skills that helps you through life.
Before we hit the submit button lets take some time to check the post and see if we can tidy it up a little, maybe we could even get a spell checker added in here somewhere...Anyway,thats my whinge for the day and I must say I feel better getting it off my chest.
Sparra...
I concur Sparra.
I don't like to sound like a Nazi but there are definite boundaries between SMS and typing for a site such as this.
It drives me nuts as well.
Puk
I agreeb wib sparra. tha speling on this forum is disgubsting :P
  you idiot.....
I totally agree, I had to read 1 post 3 times one night before I understood what was being said.
This is a perfect place for people who can't spell overly well to learn how, to just say "I can't spell very well" is laziness and bull****. No-one is perfect and I don't mean the average mistake but some posts are terrible.
I hate this sms crap....it should be banned.

Well said Sparra, to the point but not vindictive. I personally find reading well written and well researched articles a joy to read and generally the author earns my immediate respect. And Shano..........well that was just plain funny :D :D :D

HEY KIDS
As a teacher of English, I suggest to my students not to worry about grammar and spelling too much- just try to communicate- BUT THAT'S IN A FOREIGN BLOODY COUNTRY!!
Aussie Kids- I don't want to discourage you from posting, but if you take a bit more time with your messages now you'll enjoy writing a whole lot more in the future.
Firstly, just get the message down as a rough draft. Next, check any words that you doubt. Keep a basic dictionary next to the computer (or use an online dictionary... not much fun but chances are you'll remember the new spelling. Finally, read it out aloud to check whether it makes sense before you hit the 'submit' button. Generally, people will take more notice of something that has been written well.
Juniors, be proud of your language. Please don't degrade it with "SMS" abbreviations, symbols and acronyms.
Mr Woodstoka- I have a whole galaxy of spelling homework for YOU!! See me after skool!
Also, the forum posting rules state:
- Members should post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing"...
If you can't spell, open Microsoft Word or similar program, type your post in there first, click spell check and then cut and paste into here...a good solution and it only takes two extra seconds ;)

I agree with you too sparra, i am still only a junior and my spelling is not the best it could be after all i am not really the school type after leaving after year 11 to be a roo shooter. But i love reading storing and recounts of hunting but some are just not worth reading! you cant even get anywhere when your stopping to try and figure out what they are trying to say. I always try my best in my posts but if any of you pick up on any SMS talk or spelling errors please let me know. Or give me some **** about it  Its the only way i'll get out of the habit.
Thanks
Macka
I agree you have to make an effort to spell correctly, I'm one of the worst spellers around.
Just a suggestion download "Google" toolbar (it's free) this contains a spellchecker. So when you open your Internet Explorer to view this site it's (spellchecker) there in front of you.
cheers

For my age I think I’m one of the worst spellers, I try to use Microsoft word then copy and paste here.

To be honest mate, when we first started some of your posts were very hard to read, but I tell ya what, I give you massive credit as over the years your writing has improved out of sight!
I put a lot of it down to making thousands of posts on here and regularly having to read and edit and correct your own work. Writing your articles for the mags etc has also done you heaps of good I reckon.
Good on ya mate.

i also hate the sms talk, i am 15 with NO phone at all and when i try and read a text from my sister to my mum i can't understand sometimes.
i always try and make my posts/stories well written and make sure the spelling is correct because i know how annoying sms talk is.

And a credit to you it is mate. You always write clearly and legibly and it makes what you have to say just that bit more worth the read.

Just thought I remind you again!!!!!
A boy I use to sit next to at Shorncliffe State School was a terrible speller, and after the teacher tried to read one of his essays she told him that he didn't know the Queens English, David was very hurt and replied of course he did she lives in Buckingham Palace!..Glenn...

sometimes people dont even think of checking it. I always have typing errors and my grammer is no good ill use the microsoft idea it was good
I suppose at the end of the day it's good to see people posting on here, the biggest problem I have with our English language is all of the Americanisms displacing our way of speaking and worst of all the way we think...Glenn...
I don't mind spelling errors and and the occasional bad grammer,we all have them and are all guilty of it from time to time. What annoys me is the sms mentality that some seem to have cottoned on to.
If you take some time to read the forum rules you will see that it's not allowed.Anyway, maybe I'm old fashioned.
Thats enough of me whinging....I just thought i'd get it back to the top..Have a good day and invest in a dictionary...
regards...Sparra
Good on you boys, we should all strive to improve the way in which we communicate, spoken or written. It's all this "net slang" people use these days, picked up from "MSN" and all these chat forums.
Being a 42 yo 22 yo, I am somewhat detached from all that stuff, never really getting into the net chat etc etc (too busy hunting and mucking around in the workshop!! ), and pisses me off royaly too when I see it.
Hey there Ado...Didn't you say you were 21 in the ages thread???

Bill
Hehehe, definately am 21! :D Just making a point, I didn't grow up with all this "cyber generation" stuff, and am a bit old fashioned in that regard. Didn't even know how to use a computer till I was forced to at University!! (try handwritting 50 page reports!!! ).
I just think people should do their best to communicate as correctly as possible, and it seems to be a bit lost in young people these days (there I go sounding like a 40yo again  )
Ado
And once again for those that need reminding....

I think this is pretty petty, and we should get over it and move on as we are all grown men here and not in primary school.jmo.
Some of our junior's are still in school Stealth ;)
A friendly reminder ever now and then is fine IMO, but there's no need for people to go on once it's been reminded.
I certainly hear where you're coming from though mate, hence my above post. ;)

I think the main grievance is with the sms type abbreviations its very lazy.
I guess, we're not only here to help each other out with HUNTING but with all sorts of things.
We share advice on how to make knives but I don't see you criticising that?
What's wrong with helping people improve their spelling and grammar as well? We do want to try to show the public we are not redneck hill billies, and a good way to do that is to have high standards for this forum.
Perhaps you don't want to improve your standards or present a good front for bowhunting to the public, but please don't criticize those of us that do, and that encourage to do likewise.
cheers,
Luke
Here you go Howie...A few pages on the subject and it still keeps happening...:(:(
