ok thanks woody so is this the time of year sambar are rutting
Woodstoka,
I am no expert on Sambar, but I believe they are not confined to rigid breeding cycles, but there seems to be a peak in breeding in September.
I think that younger deer may cycle the breeding times as they hit maturity, but after a year or two settle in seasonal rut cycles, probably triggered by the daylight getting longer into Spring/Summer.
Older Stags have a home range that they cruise around, and if the sniff out a receptive hind, romance can bloom at any time of year. A stag doesnt have to be in rut to breed. 8)

Stoka- I agree with Woody, i think the area you have been into at the start August is a good starting point for you, and also i feel over the next few weeks will be ok too. say to mid oct.

You will possibly find that your secret hunting spot is the same as everyone elses, you should find fresh rubs around late May to mid June and then again from now until mid/late October. This is due to the fact that you can see Sambar in hard antler at any time of the year (not the same deer). In June, down around the area you hunt I saw a Stag in hard antler, and his mate beside him had just started his main beam/brow split in fresh growth. Unlike some other deer they (Sambar) don't all grow their antlers at the same time, nor do they only have one mating time during the year. Now is a good time for a walk, like me this weekend! 8)
