This was a topic recently on radio, some of you may have heard it, some may not, but as the majority of all of us seem to have an opinion on Steven Irwin, I pose this question in the spirit of open debate, "Should the video footage showing Irwin being speared by the bull ray be showed to the public or destroyed".

It appears to me that Irwin was first and foremost a "showman" and thus was his final act his greatest show and accordingly in the spirit of all showmen would he want "the show to go on" and be made public?. Over to you.... :D

Do you remember how sharks were demonised after JAWS came out?
All we need is to turn fairly harmless stingrays into ravaging monsters. Some of the news stories i have seen have already been headed "stingray attack!". It wasn't. It was a stingray defense, when it thought it was under attack.

Let the poor man rest. He might have liked to make a show out of his life, and didn't mind making a clown of himself, but i don't think we have to do it with his death.

If you were his kids, would you like to see the moment you lost your daddy over and over on every channel? As if it isn't painful enough?

I wouldn't. That's just my humble opinion.

Nup. Burn it. We don't nor should we be able to view this. The man is dead. Leave it at that.

Might be like those families who (had) have to watch the aeroplanes crashing into the Twin Towers or having their villiage bombed- again and again and again... reality hurts.

Should never be shown - destroy it MPO

I for one wouldn't want it shown.
I remember what it was like after my car accident and my mate died having the reporters knocking at the door sticking a camera in my face wanting me to comment on my mates death less then 24hrs after he passed.

Let the man rest in peace I say.

Gee's Hood! The media have no compasion sometimes have they.
I say do not air it at all. I have had the memory of my old man laying lifeless on the kitchen floor of his own home, stuck in my head now, for 14 months. I saw the last stages of his life slowly dissapearing right before my eye's. That was the last image I have of him! It is a very personal feeling as we all know when we loose someone close, so leave it at that, personal! I would certainly not like to see it splashed across the TV screen. Let his family and friends remember him as he was, doing what he loved to do. I beleive the public do not need to see it! We all know what happened, let the man go in peace. Scott

Mmm seems to be pretty one sided... So lets throw in a few other arguments.. what about the scientific aspects that could be learned from studying the video on the behaviour of the bull ray and exactly what happened in this instance.. I also seem to recall that Irwin was a great advocate on "the dangers associated with mixing with dangerous animals" and when he was inadvertantly on the receiving end commented similar to " silly me" ... so on that basis could it not be used for "training purposes". There is also a suggestion that in his will he may have stipulated that should his death be by "misadventure" that he wanted the footage shown.. Irwin was also very philanthropic and sponsored many worthwhile charities including "Canteen" and others. Having in mind the huge commercial aspects to the footage and stills sold to the media.. if the sales of same went to one of his 'preferred' charities or maybe his family and the kids... It appears that when one gets over the purely "emotive" response.. there may be some advantages. Some food for thought.

No advantages imho. It has clearly been stated how it happened and why it happened by Ben Croft (I think thats his name). I for one am totally against it coming under media (un)controll. It is a fair point about the donations but I would not like to see anyone profit over someone elses death.

I don't care what they do with the film, but to show the film would be crass and for someone to watch it out of morbid curiosity would be sick.

I realy cant believe that there are people out there that would derive any form of enjoyment from this footage :x i think the tape should be destroyed straight away and talked of no more.

I for one, would like to see the tape, but not enough to have his family stress out when it pops up on the screen. apart from the kids, I would think his family would have watched it a few times, seeing how it was the last thing they would see him do.

Weird - what is scientific in watching some one die – its not like the marine biologists do not know how the stingrays defend themselves or why - looks like voyeurism at its worsts!

If you think about it though, thousands of people watched his shows (also involving his baby once) at his Australia Zoo, and the whole world could have seen him taken under and ripped to bits by a crocodile if he ever got "too close".

Still doesn't warrant releasing the tape, just good that it was away from the crowds.

Weird - what is scientific in watching some one die

People being doing it for years...Hospital staff do it every day its called "observation"

I am led to believe that there have only been 3 recorded instances of death by the bull ray in the last decade...that alone I would suggest could possibly warrant further examination.

If you think about it though, thousands of people watched his shows (also involving his baby once) at his Australia Zoo, and the whole world could have seen him taken under and ripped to bits by a crocodile if he ever got "too close".

Exactly and that would have been all over the world media after the incident.

It has already been established that the ray was acting in self defence as Steve was "coming over the top" of it. Perfectly natural reaction from the animal according to all educated accounts, thus nothing can be gained from watching the man getting stabbed in the chest by the animal.

I guess its human nature, when there's footage of a girl getting a limb torn off by a great white, or someone getting a bullet in a war, I for one, don't close my eyes, and I'm guessing, you guys don't either.
If the tape was aired, maybe they would stop it, before that pont. I doubt if you would see much anyway, underwater scenes arn't that clear.

8) 8) Some interesting comments.... I think it is up to his family to decide out of respect to them.... Maybe in time they would see it or not...
or maybe they decide to put it in a vault for say 30years .... Crow 8)

The tape should be destroyed, never to be seen, **** what would it do to those poor kids if it go out. As if having to grow up without your father wouldn't be bad enough.
Regards Mick.

As other have said what would it do to his kids.

Also some have said won't take long to get out so i wondered how "out there" it was so i did a little search (I DID NOT WATCH IT) i think the death of someone is not something to be seen by every tom **** and harry.

So here is the picture.
