Friday morning i awoke with that amazing feeling only an iminent hunt can provide, but how quickly things can change when the planned hunt was cancelled. I was not to let this happen. After asking, with no luck, for a partner here on-site i decided a solo hunt would still be great fun and was on my way.
After unpacking gear and a quick bite to eat i was stoked to see a mob of 30 goats come onto the property out of the adjoining national park. Quick as i could i was ready and in the bush starting what was to be a 2hour stalk. I was right in amongst the goats but had a visible range of 2metres thanks to the thick cover, but with some tricky footwork i managed to get to the top of the ridge and into some clearer vegetation. With light fading i chose to take the first goat that presented itself for the shot. This was to be a mature nanny and when i got within 14metres of her i put an arrow through her chest. I thought it may have been alittle high so i put another arrow through her boiler room in an instant. She travelled about 20 meteres and was down for good.
A couple of billy's were drawn in by the commotion and were heading my way, one had even chose the game trail i was on and at 15 metres i came to full draw but couldnt get a decent shot angle. I waited and waited still at full draw when at 5 metres he had to negotiate a bush and turn to his left. As soon as i saw this i put an arrow straight through him lengthways. He merely turned 180 degrees and stood for a good 30 seconds before the fatal effects of the razor sharp tusker javelin took effect. He simply took 1 step forward, dropped and rolled downhill to end up next to the nanny i had taken only 3 minutes earlier.I was wrapped and did my best to set them up for a photo session but with light levels low i had to hurry and by far the most dangerous part of the whole hunt was the self timed photo's. The slope cannot be truly seen in the photos and while i was dashing from camera to goats down a slippery rocky slope if i was to fall it would have been a good 30 meters before i could have hopefully stopped myself.
So it was a great reward for a solo trip. Just a note why i took the nanny.
I spent last year travelling on a boat with no hunting opportunities, and since returning have only had 1 shot and missed a goat at about 35 yards , so i was determined to prove to myself i could still use my bow ethicaly, and with both animals exipring very quickly i was wrapped and a re-born ;)
So next time I'm looking for a hunting partner put your hand up and come along, after all it could've been 2 for you ;)
