View Full Version : FishTrap Buildalong(Quiver)
There seemed to be a bit of interest in the fishtrap quiver I made so I am going to do a bit of a buildalong.I have pinched a nerve it my back so cant make arrows today so am making a quiver instead.
Last time I used split bamboo for the sticks that went length wise but the splitting of the bamboo is very time consuming and some people dont have access to bamboo so this time I am going to use the same 3mm round for this that I use in the general construction.I use 3mm round and also some flat.

I soak this in a bucket of water until you can wrap it around your finger without it breaking.

I am using a leather disc as the base on this one.One important point is that you want an odd number of the sticks that run length wise.I put this base onto a piece of pvc pipe to keep it nice and round and and hold it in place with some large rubber bands.

I start with the round material as it makes a stiffer basket and I want the base to be nice and strong to take the b/heads. After weaving 2 lengths of the round I switch to the flat by overlaping the last couple of inches of the round on top of the flat.

I must have missed this when you originally posted it Kim. I'm very interested mate.
What's the next step? :D
I almost forgot about this thread as it was not getting a lot of responce at the time I have sort of let it go but if you like I will be back in the shed tomorrow and will take some more pics then. Thanks for the interest.

That would be great mate. :D
Same as paul mate, very interesting. Certainly a type of quiver you could nock up in the bush if you were lost, or just playing around camp.
Ok you guys have got all inspired again so I did a fair bit more today.
I continued with the differant types of cane with the round and the flat.If you are after a stiffer quiver use just the round as it makes it much more solid and is quicker to use also as it doesnt want to twist as bad as the flat while weaving. When it was the right length I finished with the round to make the top nice and solid and then started the finishing collar.Take the quiver off the pvc pipe and soak the top of the quiver in a buket of water to soften the cane that runs length ways as this is what makes the ring part. Now you begin by looking down at the top of the quiver and bending one of the straight bits to the outside of the quiver and around the next upright and leave it poking through into the centre,do this for each upright until you are all the way around and then go around again until you rub out of cane or the ring is thick enough. Some of the ones on this one ended up a bit short as it was the first time I had done it this way so leave heaps of spare lenght on the uprights.Pic so far

One of the best things about working with the cane is you can add bits after you are finshed and I will add the attachment points for the strap tomorrow and might add some bits to make it look a bit more trad.Making the quiver this way instead of having stiff uprights it is quite flexable and I can shape it before putting varnich on which hardens the whole thing up and sets it in place.

Very cool Kim, I like the cane weaving, it's very simple yet very effective.
Very traditional looking too.
Definately a future project I'm considering. :D
Ok I love holidays I got time to finish this project before the hunt on the weekend.I have had an idea for a while I wanted to try to stop the arrows moving around in a back quiver.I added some spikes in the bottom of the quiver to stop the heads banging together all the time as you walk.It seems to work really well.I add these before pushing the foam plug into the bottom of the quiver.

In this pic you can also see the attchment points I added today for the strap and also that I storched the cane to give it an older look and then varnished it.
Cheers KIM
Its all done now and apart from the very average model wearing it I am very pleased with the results. You can see in the pic how it moulds to the body(even mine) so is very comfortable to wear and I added some sheep skin it the top and on the strap so the arrows are nice and quiet and dont move around much. Now I need to decide if I am going to use the bow quiver or this one on the weekend it will hold 10 arrows nicely which is more than enough for a days hunting.I hope this has been a bit of interest to some of you guys that make your own gear and thanks to the guys that got me interested enough again to get it finished.
Feel free to throw any question my way(or mabey some diet tips. :D )
Cheers KIM

Any chance you'd sell one of those? Look great.
I missed this thread also, good job Kim, I like the different pattern in the weave.Did you seal the cane?...Glenn...
Thanks Glenn yer this one turned out better than the first one. :D
I guess I could make one for sale but not sure when I would find the time or what price you would be willing to pay.
