A question for the more expierienced of you trad guys ,I have just picked up a Samick Talon at 62" and 45lbs and as this is my first recurve I have been checking brace heights ect.
To measure brace height I believe it is the distance from the string to the deepest part of the grip if this is correct I am measuring this at 6 1/2" I am led to understand that this should be about 71/2" if that is correct do I need a new string? If so ,as this is the string that came with the bow what type of string should I be looking at and who supplies them. I have read a bit about flemish strings can some one please enlighten me on whatthey are as I believe the standard strings are of not great quality any info on these matters would be great .
Thanks Andrew :)

Gday mate welcome to the world of Trad.
Answer to your question the string you were supplied with should be the correct one if its an new bow.
What you have to do is destring the bow leaving one end on and twist the string 6/8 times then re string the bow, check the brace height as you had mentioned. Keep doing this until you get to the recommended height.
Then try a few arrows. experiment with a slightly shorter brace, and then a little longer. you will find the sweet spot the bow should be quieter and your arrows will fly better. remember to adjust your nock point.
Good luck

The brace height for a Samick Talon should be between 8 3/4" to 9 1/4".

You definately need a new string.

If this is a new bow take it back and exchange it for the right length as you won't be able to twist it this far.

And yes, brace height is measured from the deepest part of the grip, from the string, to the string.

Flemish string is the go mate.
I can organise one for you if you dont know where to get one.
They cost $15
What is the AMO length for that bow.It should say it on the side but im not familiar with Samicks so I dont know.

the AMO is 62" so the actual string length should be 58". A fastflyte flemish string would be a good addition, get them to add some 'woolie whispers' as well. :D

I bought that exact poundage talon and it came with a doo sung string which was to long and only gave me about a 6 1/2 inch brace when twisted to max. But on the weekend at lakeglenbawn garry made me a flemish twist string which shoots alot smoother a gives me a brace hight of 9 inch. You will need a shorter string or a flemish twist. :D
