View Full Version : Lake George
I went to Canberra with my girl on monday and we stopped at the lookout overlooking Lake George on the way back.
My dad used to tell me that they didnt know where the water came from.I can remember this whole area being covered in it.Now its dry.
Its a beautiful view from there.Does anyone know anything about it where the water used to come from and if its had any recently?
apparently there are a lot of deer around this area
here is the photo I stitched together

Gday Jeffro, I went hunting on lake George earlier this year for fallow, i dont know much about the water supply there but i do knwo that it use to be a docking station for large ships in its earlier days. If u went for a walk on lake george and asked the property owner if u could first, u would be guaranteed to see literalyl thousands of deer there. I went for one day and wen i went to sleep that night at home all i could see in my head were deer thats how many there were lol.
it use to be a docking station for large ships in its earlier days.
How did the large ships get there????
there are plenty of deer around lake george.
The problem is getting access, there are so many people who go poaching there and unless you know someone with a property it is almost impossible to get access around there
Hey Jeffro,
Nice pics mate, looked like you had good day for it.
Lake george is a funny sorta lake, very flat and when it had water in it very shallow. Like most inland lakes water enters as runoff from the surrounding hills, the two main creeks that fill it are Taylors Creek to the east and Deep creek further towards Bungendore. I grew up with a couple of mates who's family's own good sized properties on the eastern side of the lake so have spent a fair amount of time fishing/shooting around there.
The Last time the lake had decent water in it was back in the eraly to mid nineties in which time we were catching good yellowbelly up to about 4lbs, redfin, silver perch the odd murry cod and of course carp. At its fullest the max depth would be no more than 3 or 4 metres right over the eastern side near a couple of rocky knoll's, so i find it hard to beleive it was a docking station in its time.
It used to be popular as a sailing lake although it is a very dangerous lake to boat in because of its shallow nature, quite often the fences were only a few centremetres under the surface - there has been several boating deaths on the lake.
The Lake has been dry for the last 5 years with only a couple of pools created due to local rainfall.

Did you see any rabbits at the lookout?
Last time I was there I went for a walk in that bit of scrub below where your pic is taken from and saw heaps of em.I also found 3 arrows :D
Im lucky enough to have access to a property that backs onto the lake and the place is crawling with fallow. You can get lucky with doorknocking around the area (as I did) But with all the poachers and spotlighters the property owners are very wary of anyone.
Oh yeah im stuffed if I know whats the go with the water but I remember when there was water there you could still see the tops of the fences stretch the entire width of the lake.
Cheers Dave.

Excellent imformation there fellas,
I wasnt really asking the question because I wanted to go hunting there although theres no denying id love to.I just remember seeing the fence lines dissapearing into the water and it looking fantastic when my parents used to take us down the snow when we were kids.
I can see it would be dangerous sailing there because of the fences but it is such a big area that you would have to anyway if you liked sailing.
I hope the water comes back soon.
