hey,

Ive been doing a bit of research , but i still cant find much to do with increasing stamina in a hunting scenario. So my question to ya'll is what kind of stuff do you do to increase your stamina/endurance when hunting, and what things aspiring hunters like myself should do to become a little more effective in the bush.
Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated (just as long as im not being made fun of :D )

I play A grade squash...

Works for me ;)

Anthing that improves your overall cardiovascular fitness will improve your ability to put in that one shot when you're buggered at the end of the day.

A bit of anaerobic work helps too to combat those quick steep climbs sometimes needed to get into prime ambush position etc...

Load up your back pack and head to a national park and hit the trails for a few hours walk/hike each weekend of even just walk your neighbour hood each night.

I have been thinking about the same thing over the past couple of weeks as I'm heading to New Zealand in January 07 and at the moment I'd probably croak it in the first 3 hours of the hunt knowing what the hills are like over there from my last trip.
It's a good excuse to get my daughter out in her pusher and go for a nice afternoon walk to the local lake or playground. She loves it and I get fit win win situation.
As well as I'm starting to push-ups, chin-ups, tummy crunches as of tonight after I had an hours shooting today I realised that my muscles have become very lazy in the past 6-8months (not shooting much at all in that time).

Hope that helps a bit.

I ride the pushy to work 6 days a week which is around 26 km's return that keeps me pretty fit  hardly work up a sweat when tramping the usual 20+km's we do while hunting up here.
train hard, play easy!

Gday mate, i agree with bear, biek riding is a great form of exercise to keep you in shape. I do alot of bike riding for soccer, during the pre season to get me that lil bit fitter. It is also easier on your joints compared to jogging and walking and can also really strengthen them muscles surrounding your knees which help protect them against pressure whilst climbing mountainous areas and so forth. Surprisingly polardi's (not sure of spelling) can really help with your fitness and further hunting. Try giving that a go. Its easy aswell just plug in the tape and follow the instructions.

I agree with Hood. Simulate simulate simulate!!

Load your daypack...wear your hiking boots...wear some thick cotton pants and socks...even carry a stick similar to your bow!!! :D

Your body fatigues in many different ways (IMO), so you should train it to handle the stresses that are applied under hunting conditions. You can be the fittest bugger in the world, but sore feet will still slow you down, and strain from carrying your pack will still inhibit proper form.

I learnt at an early age, playing rep level footy I was fit as, but a 10k walk in my snake boots would knock my legs for a six.All the tradesman types being used to wearing their yakkas at work, didn't even flinch!!

Swimming, strengthens the heart allowing you to keep a higher level of oxygen in your blood, also keeping for muscles under load (e.g. pulling your bow back and holding it drawn) will increase the time before your muscle starts making lactic acid which causes the burning feeling in your muscles.

i read somewhere that the lactic acid actauly helps you do something for longer

No mate
Lactic acid definately does the opposite. When you've bench pressed 10 reps and you can't get that last one due to that horrible burn in your pec muscle or you run 100 meters flat out and your thighs feel like they r on fire - thats lactic acid and by no way does it help. I think you are thinking of the muscle building tool ANIMO ACIDS - they are gooduns.

Lactic acid can be your best friend the longer you can keep your self in the zone the greater resistance you will build. Its just comes with training and conditioning.Set your self goals then push past them.

always helps to see a lot of game on the hunt. no matter how fit you are walking in the bush and seeing nothing seems to drain you ,but once you see that big boar the adrenilin will get you up a montain

I find that just going for a bush walk with a backpack works really well. Try keep the weight below 20kg or it will wreck your knees.

I just go out hunting when I can, it might stuff you a bit at first but I recon a walk with a bow beats a walk without one any day :)
Try hunting with some fit people, they will push you by having to keep up with them (hey Adam and Pego  :) )

I play alot of sport and train alot(various).

Eating the right foods can help with stamina while out there. Maintaining steady blood sugar levels is important........water more so.

Eat small amounts of food often.......every hour /half hour. To keep glycogen levels in muscles(stored energy in muscles) at a good level.

once you deplete glycogen in muscles..........lactic acid kicks in to limit your muscles output and try to prevent you from breaking down your muscle tissue for energy------->not good for health of organs and vital funtion.
