It was about 10am,Cape York and we'd seen no pigs at all for the morning and had been out there since 7am.
Phillipe and I sussed out about a 3km stretch of the creek and it was totally dry the whole way.
There was a few small dams and waterholes along the way between the creek and the road so we left the creek to check them as we went but nothing there in any of them.
Back to the creek and as we were rounding a bend a movement caught my eye.It was a full grown dingo sitting behind a log and looking straight at me. I froze and in a short time it ran off.
Another 500 metres ahead the map showed some water holes on the other side of the creek. They were a K or so out from the creek so we plotted in the position on the gps and follwed the arrow.
GPS's are such an excellent thing for those that have never used one.I never knew how good they were.
You can totally lose yourself in the bush and find your way straight back its unreal.
We approached the first of these 2 dams and nothing was visible on the first one.I wish i'd taken a photo of it cause it was about 150m long and 50 m wide with some paperbark trees in the middle right next to the water. There were no other trees on its bank except for in this 1 small area of it.
Phillipe decided he was gonna walk down and check out the 2nd dam and I would walk around the 1st one.He walked off and i walked closer to one end of the water hole when i saw a pig with its back to me in the water by the paperbark trees. The wind was in my face and there was enough wind to be making a bit of noise through the trees so that it would mask up some of the sound of my footsteps. The ground everywhere was covered in dry leaves.
The boar was a youngish one but still a fair size and had disappeared just down below a small bank so I covered the first 30m or so quite easily.
Then he was in view again and as his head went behind each tree i gradually closed the gap to 10metres and the to 8 and then to about 5 metres crouching.
The boar had its head underwater and there was 1 more tree in the way.
It took another step forward and as it was doing that i drew back on my 60# patriot recurve from a kneeling position ,he moved into clear view and in a good quatering away position I released a POC shaft with a tusker delta on it.
The arrow buried up into its chest and the boar ran about 50 metres, stopped and sat down.I didnt want to take any chances of him running so i stalked up again and shot it again.
Now he was down and and I had my first boar.
No big tusks but I didnt care
Unreal I'd been waiting for this moment a long time and have never had access to pigs much before :D
