View Full Version : Bad news
Just letting you all know that my Father was injured badly in a motorcycle accident on his way home from work in Bundaberg this afternoon.
His ankle has been badly broken and the head of his femur pushed up through his pelvic socket.
He thankfully sustained no head or spinal injuries.
I know nothing further but that they are investigating wether his ankle requires surgery prior to being taken to Brisbane for surgery on his femur and hip.
Seems some young F@#KHEAD (pardon my language) was doing a burnout on the roadside and lost control resulting him being flicked out into Dad's path. I'm uncertain as to how Dad impacted the car but the front end of the bike is a writeoff with major damage to the car. (he'd better hope I don't meet him down the street) :x
So, please forgive me if I am not able to tend to any PM's or emails over the weekend and coming days.
Please keep Dad (and my Mum) in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks,
Luke
sorry to hear that luke, hope all goes well for him.

I'll be praying for him and the doctors mate.
God bless you all.

Dad is being flown to Royal Brisbane as I type.
Most of the bones in his foot have been broken and his ankle dislocated. Dr's cannot rule out that he may lose his foot, but they say it is unexpected as blood flow to the area seems OK.
I do not know when he'll be operated on.
Thanks for the well wishes, they are very much appreciated. I'll be most sure to pass them on.

If he rides a bike he's probably a tough old bugga :D :D My father in law is 78 and took a bad spill on his bike recently..we had concerns it would prove fatal..but he pulled through and continues to work his guts out every day on the farm. My thoughts are with you and hope for a speedy recovery for your Dad.. :D :D
Mate sorry to hear of your fathers accident.
Hope he has a quick recovery
For those who only hear the accident stats, and think like the general public that motorbike riders obviously need more training or something, incidents like this really burn me.
Over 60% of motorbike accidents are caused by a car driver, and usually that is only when the car driver isn't doing something stupid or negligent, it is usually just because car drivers don't look for motorbikes.
But something like this....
They should take the youg moron in and make him watch all the surgery and be there right throughout the healing process and the long haul back to health, to give them some idea of the consequences of their actions.
Even if you aren't doing anything this stupid folks... Watch out for motorbikes.
Puk
Bloody hell mate! Give him our best! Scott & Jo
Our thoughts and prayers are with your Father and Doc. as he has his surgery. And may he heal quickly.

As Jonno said, they breed 'em tough up there, so I'm sure he'll pull through and make a good Christmas story out of it for the kids. Very best luck to your Dad from Ant and family.
My family and I hope that all goes well with your Dads operations and that he makes a speedy recovery Luke. We'll also pray that your Mum and Dad are comforted in their time of need.
Luke, sorry to read about your fathers accident, hope everything turns out as good as possible, as you know I live in Bundy so if there is anything I can do to help out your family up here just let me know mate & I will get straight to it.
Cheers, Phil.
I'm sorry to hear it Luke. Wasn't able to get to a computer all weekend and have only just read this now.
Janice and I are praying for you and your family, but especially your Dad, a skilled surgeon and a swift recovery.
Jono.

Have spent most of the weekend with Dad up at Royal Brisbane.
His ankle has been operated on and the surgeon's pinned the bones for alignment. He is going back under today for them to close up the wound there.
His hip is busted in two places and at first they had a bit of trouble getting the head of his femur to pull back through. It has come out now and has 20kg of traction weight on it being applied via a pin that has been put all the way through his femur, just above the knee.
His left wrist was also fractured in two places and a 4 inch long half inch wide gash on his right forearm has been stitched.
All up he's doing well considering but is in terrible pain when they have to move him (twice a day at least) to avoid him getting pressure sores. Mum has to leave the room as she cannot bare to watch.
We hope to find out today if his hip will require surgery, we are praying it wont and that with the traction it will self align and the bones will knit together without pinning.
I'm taking a few copies of BHDU mag for Dad today so rest assured he's not going to be bored (when he's well enough to be able to read).
It turns out the car Dad was hit by required towing...and the driver was still there when my sister's finance went to pick up the bike. Safe to say he was on the receiving end of a few well chosen words.
Again, thanks to all of you for your well wishes, thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear of your fathers pain, Luke.
I gave up riding motorbikes to discourage my younger brother from riding after seeing him have a crash with a car.
Incredible shock seeing one of your loved ones laying unconsious, bleeding on the road.
We still ride but I will never forget it.
Hope he gets well soon and if it's any consolation I have seen lots of accidents like this over the years with good outcomes.
A lot of my mates weren't so lucky, laying six feet under.
As my motorcycle brothers used to say, all the senses trapped in a steel cage.
wish him a sppedy recovery buddy

Luke,
Sorry to hear of your fathers accident. Glad to hear that the surgeons were able to repair his foot. I hope his bones mend fast and his pain eases quickly. All the best to you and your family.
Cheers Tim
Sorry for the late post Luke just spotted the post. Mate all the best wishes to your father for a speedy recovery.
Mate let me know if he would like any more company in hospital once he has started recovering a bit more
Your father is great company and a pleasure to talk to.
The best to you all,
Baz
Thanks again all.
Bazz I'm sure Dad would appreciate the company when things start to improve some.
The Dr's said today that his hip will require surgery and that it will be scheduled for Friday, at the earliest as it is best (apparently) to leave such injuries as this for a week minimum prior to operating. They said also, that it would be at leat 12 weeks :!: before Dad could even consider walking again. So, a long hard road ahead and probably not home for Christmas.
I took my laptop up yesterday and Dad read for himself the well wishes and thoughts of you all. He asked me to thank you on his behalf.
cheers

Crikey Luke,
Sorry to hear of this, looks like he is in good hands. I can't say that I would have left the twit on the side of the road with only a few harsh words to remember me by (but thats just me hey).
Kathy and I hope that your dad gets through the recovery period with the least discomfort possible and want you to know that your Dad, yourself and the rest of your family are in the thoughts and prayers of many.

Well, yesterday, after 4 operations and a list of complications as long as your arm (including having to have 5 litres of bile drained from his stomach and 2 weeks of constant vomiting every few hours  )...
Dad got up and out of bed yesterday for the first time since Nov 10th (60 days!!!).
He used a walker frame to only take four steps forward and four backward. Not much to us but... They took 10 mins just to sit Dad all the way up as he hasn't done that in as long either.
He is also probably going to be having his first real shower in 60 days! Something he is VERY much looking forward to!!!
He asks me to pass on his heartfelt thanks to all who conveyed their best wishes and prayers to him, and I too pass on my thanks to you.
thanks,
Luke 8)
That's great mate.

He has turned another corner on the long road back. I hope the road is smooth from here.

I can't believe I missed this notice - all the best from me to your dad in hoping a speedy recovery.
Cars: tin cans with drivers paying attention to their mobile phone (text and talk), cigarette lighter etc, smacking kids in the back seat, looking for their can of whatever that is spilling contents in their lap, and then wondering why they can't change channel on the big screen in front of them. And that is if they are not so stoned to forget they are in a car to start with.
Neighbour just had his parked car smashed by an idiot doing burnouts, he managed to drive away before we could get him. I would love to see drivers licences act as car keys - no license and you can't start the car, then add a breatho to it, then some decent penalties if people stuff up. In Japan if you have any alcohol in you then goodbye licence for 12 months!
I used to ride, twice went down, one was due to a nutter in a car and another was a mates bike which I found to have a brake issue (locked on me!). When I started physio studies my lecturers found out I was a bike rider and called me every name implying "idiot" I have ever heard of. After a few years of studies and countless scenarios of motor vehicle injuries etc, I sold everything, even a rare helmet, so I would not be tempted again.
Even then I loved riding and nearly bought a bike when living in Japan - my teachers (martial arts ones this time) made some pointed remarks about coming to Japan to get a broken leg and miss all the training, and so I dropped the idea. So now my dream is to drive a LAV or soemthing similar :) maybe that is somethign you can suggest to your dad, get a LAV and run over the cars doing burnouts

thats awesome luke!!!!! :P ... i know it might not seem much, but those few steps mark a milestone for a speedy recovery... i know with my grandmother, when she broke her hip, she was immobile for almost as long, and after she took her first 3 steps, 1 out 1 around and 1 back, it only took her 4 weeks before she was let out of hospital and classified fully mobile...
i hope that your dad makes an even speedier recovery and i wish him, you and all of your family all the best...

luke mate very sorry to hear this bad news i hope sincerly it all goes well thinking of you and your family stay strong steve.
Well, just a week and a half after getting out of bed for the first time in 60 days, Dad has been given approval to go home!
He has come on in leaps and bounds (figuratively speaking) since getting up for the first time last Tuesday. Some pretty intensive physio and a lot of effort on Dad's behalf have paid off.
He will still not be able to put weight onto his injured leg and that will be reviewed at a specialists appointment in March. He will continue to undergo physio 3 times per week to help his recovery.
He will be using crutches to get around home and a wheele chair for shopping trips etc.
Dad's pumped to be out of hospital for the first time since November 10!
Thanks to all for your well wishes, I know they played a large part in all this!

It's been 19 months since Dad's accident.
His rehab has been very hard and very long. He has come many miles towards recovery but still had a long way to go.
He is now able to walk on crutches but cannot walk unaided or do some other simple tasks.
He is back at work 15hrs a week and that is looking to be increased to 20hrs and getting back to his role prior to the accident instead of more menial "rehab" type desk work.
I also wanted to share with you guys a proud moment for Thunda (Clint), Bassett (Bevan/Dad) and myself back in March.
Amy, Taylor and I took a flying visit to Australia for my sister and fiancee's wedding at Bundy.
The ceremony and day were very special and all went off with out any hitches.
It was my first wedding was official photographer , helped by my lovely assistant (Amy)...I thought you may like to see some of the pics.

One of Dad's driving goals was to be able to walk my sister down the isle. He did this very well with her help and one crutch. It was very inspiring to witness.
Just the other day Dad sent me the following pic.
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k205/griffo79/Dadstrack.jpg
This is a pic of the track that Dad has worn in the grass from doing his walking laps each day to help his rehab! We call it his goat track and if you look closely you can see the mini tracks either side of the main one where his crutches touch down each time.
I think that shows more hard work and commitment to anything that I've seen in a long time. It is one of the most inspiring efforts I've ever seen.
Also, just the other week, Dad was able to drive for the first time since the accident. It was in an auto and not on the public road, but another huge milestone towards getting back to as close a normal life as possible.
So, there ya go. Sorry for the very long post, but I just wanted to let ya all know how things are going, how much effort Dad has put into his recovery and of how proud we all are of him.
cheers,
Luke
