I was going to ask this question on another thread but didn’t want to hijack the post. On most average sized game i.e. goats pigs etc my self imposed max shooting distance is forty meters. On small game rabbits, cats, minor birds etc I feel they can be shot out to 70m if someone wishes, is my logic floored?
Excelpoint shot a Red deer at 55m and some members questioned whether the string should be dumped at that distance, would his actions have been questioned if it was a rabbit that he was shooting at?
Personally I wouldn’t have taken the shot but then again I would have shot at a rabbit at 80 meters. Hypocritical of me I guess .
Your thoughts should the Game being hunted dictate the distance you shoot at?
Personally i wouldn't be able to hit such a small target such as a rabbit at 40m let alone 70m. Your doing a good job if you can. My max for goats (which is all i hunt at the moment) would be 35m.

Kill zones on larger game make longer distance shots, with high powered bows and a practiced exponent, a more ethical proposition.
That being said, the KE of any arrow is decreasing with distance so the maximum distance I would shoot at is 50mtrs.
This is my max practiced distance and the distance that I would still get good penetration.
I wouldn't try for Buff, large Pigs or BIG Billys (as their will to live is incredible) at that distance but smaller Goats and Deer definately.
Rabbits are 20-30mtrs for me, but I like to head shoot them as I eat the meat.
The chance for injured game is much greater with a small target at distance.
No animal should suffer unduly, even rodents.

I practice out to 40 yds, thats also my max hunting distance. I do play at 50yds from time to time but I never hunt at it. I dont believe Im good enough out to 50yds.

I have been successful out to 70-75 yards many years ago but would not attempt those shots now out of respect for my quarry. Longest pin on my bow now is forty yards.
