I went hunting with Matt when in NZ he has a wealth of experience in hunting both with bow and rifle and gave me a heap of hunting tips and info and he is a great guy (for a Kiwi)
He and his girlfriend were very welcoming of me into their home as to where his brother Steve and his wife,
For me their kindness and hospitality made my trip to NZ that much more enjoyable. They have been nice enough to invite me back again when ever I want, and I hope to make the trip for the rutt in in 2007.
Steve and Matt I take my hat off to you and your families and thank you for a great time.

DS... the deer population is definetly better off with out the choppers shooting the **** out of them.its good that the chillers stopped buying the meat due to the threat of 1080 tainted meat getting into the export to the states so now its farmed animals only.check out the game report of the nzbhs at www.nzbowhunters.co.nz .there was over 100 deer claimed for the 03/04 year.a good hunting mag to subscribe to is the nz outdoor www.nzoutdoor.co.nz or talk to ricochet and he might lend you his mags.it gives you all the ins and outs of the nz hunting scene .
Hey Nortcom,
I have checked out the nzbowhunters website on a number of occasions, some of the beasts taken for the year with the bow is just amazing. Of note were the 5 Tahr & 14 Chamois  now those beasts don't come easy, credit to those dudes.
NZ publish some great mags, especially NZ Outdoors. Nothing better than ending up in a hut with a dozen or so back issues to help pass the raiiiiiiiiny days :D
Well our prep has began, a busted up body awaits.

DS good luck on your trip.what part of south island are you hunting in. the owner of the farm im on was in the landsbrough valley three weeks ago for a week tramping and he was saying they encountered a chamios that was snozzing on the track.me mate bob was down hari hari way in january this year,he missed out but his2 mates ended up with 5 chamios between them.they were encountering sign only 100m off the road.the ones he had shots at wernt to far away but it took hour n half to get to them due to the sheer steepness of the country down there as you would know.your training is a good idea ,you got to be fit to chase thar and chamios around the hills all day.have you been lucky on your previous trips?
Nortcom,
Not 100% sure of our exact destination, though it«ÉŸs looking like the Karangarua in Westland. Though if on our arrival the Westcoast is coping a hiding we may consider something on the East, say the Rangitata or the Rakia.
Hari Hari is a great little town, not the likely location to find a bowhunting club hey. We chanced upon them during a shoot once, great bunch of fellas, surprised at the turn out, must have had the whole town shooting that day. 5 Chamois is a great effort , we too have found them close to the road on occasions, only problem for us is that it's a long to come for a side creek... we long for the real hills :D .
As far critters taken I busted a buck of just less than 8 inches in the Whataroa. My bro got a 9 1/4 inch buck in the Wanganui some year back and a couple of others here and there, though as you can imagine many mile between beasts.
Really looking forward to slugging that pack into the mountains again, you folks a real lucky we got nothing that compares (mountains) here in Aus.
Thanx for the kudos mate«É∂ds

No need to worry Sparra, the wallaby has been introduced from australia,so is a declared pest over there,so are the following introduced species from Australia.
**Possum
**Magpie
**Black Swan
Just think if the NZ conservation department got rid of all the intoduced animals from NZ, there would be nothing left but Kiwi's (Bird),

My family and I are off to Hawkes Bay in August for a few weeks and we are going to spend a week or so at a friends batch up at Taupo. Can anybody give me any info on the how, what and where of hunting the areas around Taupo or Napier?
nortcom
14-04-05, 01:10 AM
hi jindy, taupo has plenty of hunting around it.you have the kaimanawa and kaweka forests close by ,famous for its sika deer.they have plenty of huts that you can tramp to and hunt from.costs nothing to obtain a permit, which you can get from D.O.C or a hunting shop.the huts you have to pay a minimal fee to stay in.check out www.helisika.co.nz they have alot of info on the huts in these parks and about there chopper service or you can do a google search and it should bring up alot of info.if you can get to rotorua for a weekend i can jack you up a hunt with the brother as i did for HOOD.rotorua is 1 hour drive north of taupo.i can lend you a vid on sika deer ,very informative but no bowhunting on it.if you want a lend pm me with your address.

jinndy..yes you decide what block you want to hunt and at what time of the year and book it with doc who have 35 blocks or with the rakiura land inc who have 12 blocks i think.the block we had had been booked for a year for the dates we wanted.it was concided with the rut for the whitetail.there are fees for the blocks and huts.if you would like the ins and outs on who to use or see about hunting stewart island i can get them off me mate that organised the trip,as this is his 4th or 5th trip.
at our block there were rifle shooters a week previous to us and they had shot 5 according to the charter boat captian.

he thought it was neat sneaking around after the animals and pushing through scrub, what topped it off was him shooting the pine trees with his outback tipped arrows and making them stick in,the smiles he had then were priceless.

Great pics nortcom. Love that scenery. Has been over 15years since I went to NZ and am coming over later this year for a better look around. Unfortunately won't be doing any hunting as I am bringing the 'Minister for War and Finance' with me but am looking forward to going back.
