Has anyone done this course or know what is involved??
Done it.
You read a book, take a MCQ test (if you don't know the answers you sit around and discuss them til you get it right )...
And then shoot some targets (only having to hit them within the "C" scoring zone ).
Not hard really.
It probably wont teach you too much as a hunter but required by ABA if you're to bowhunt as a member of the association esp if you want to claim your game.
Just my opinion ;)

Yes and you also need to be a member of a hunting club and all ABA clubs are recognised as Hunting clubs.
Seem to recall that when I got my "R" licence I wasn't required to do a proficiency test. Just a quick read of a book then answer some mostly blatantly obvious true/false and multiple choice type questions. Don't know if this was because I was a member of an affiliated ABA hunting association namely MWFA. IMO I believe that every one should be required to do a "real" proficiency test prior to being granted a "R" licence. :D

profic.....what
i'm all for profeciency and hunting cources. but whats that i hear about only hitting a C,,,
should be a minimum of a ..B zone
i read a fair bit about ethics and clean kills on this site
yet i hear nothing about this cource....and the need to make it really count. surely a C is not good enough
as bow hunters we owe it to our sport to make it as clean cut as possable........what do you think.
Plenty of ABA targets dont have the zones in the right place for hunting shots so it should not be about zones but the ability to hit a spot the most of the time.It might seem like I am being picky but I have seen guys that scored ok at the range but botched shots on game one after another.I feel 3 d targets are a much closer thing to hunting not using the zones and using differant angles not just the full broadside shot.

ABA hunting association namely MWFA.
Johnno MWFA is a 3DAAA club not ABA, MWFA left ABA 4 years because they were taking the lions share of the money from the club when running a tournament.
Johnno MWFA is a 3DAAA club not ABA,
Oops..I stand corrected :? :?

If you contact Paul at the club contacts for Nepean Bowhunter he will advise what is involved to obtain the "R" license, I am looking to do mine with the club soon.
Cheers

did the course a long time ago, when i first started. was lucky enough to have some well known hunters like dave pender and john matson running it at my club at the time and they spent a whole day teaching new people animal tracks and measuring and the like as well as the course so for me back then it was great to watch from some experts and learn things. unfortunately i do not think the same time is put in anymore as most the older guys are to busy or just burnt out with it all. some clubs might still do a well informed course but most i have heard of now just run thru the targets give you the book and you do the test... the book has a lot of usefull info for beginners so i think it is well worth it in that respect. if you are a member of ABA i would go and do it it cost you nothing and that is what you pay your fees for.

Glenn,
I am an assessor for the R-licence through Trophy Takers and you do not need to do any sort of physical proficency test to get your R-Licence. All you need to do is be a member of a Approved Hunting Organisation (AHO) and then sit the Game council test. You have two options with the test, you can do the closed book test (less questions, but no looking at the handbook), or the open book test where you can refer back to the handbook at any stage.

Maxy, Does it have to be an archery club because I'm in ssaa for rifle shooting, will this be ok for bowhunting ?
Nah mate, as long as you are a member of ANY AHO then you can sit the test for all the category's (bowhunting, rifle, shotgunning and dogs) or only one if you choose. You can also sit the test through another AHO - that is, if you are a SSAA member you dont have to do the test with a SSAA accreditor, as long as you know your AHO's accreditation number (SSAA in your case) you will be right.
