I don't think they're more prone to problems than any other T/D recurve. They have an excellent reputation for reliability and efficiency. I've done major research on the web into Chek-Mate bows and I'm yet to hear a single bad word about them.
I currently own a Chek-Mate "Atilla" one piece recurve and I have a T/D Hunter on order that's due any day. My Atilla is one sweet shooting bow.

I have shot a few and know many that have them. The check mates are as dependable as they get.
I have a checkmate hunter 11 and it's great...but then again so was my Martin until it split....

It just shows how popular they are, mate.
I just got an email from Chad today, he said it won't be too much longer. They're having some problems with excessive moisture in the timber they use in the risers. If you don't allow enough time for the timber to dry out, it can split later on, apparently. Yep, it's been a long long wait though. :? :)

I also have a Check Mate Hunter II- it is an exceptionally sweet bow to shoot. Although the performance of the bow is totally uneffected, it was shipped to me with a small bubble under the fiberglass (in a non-working area of the limb) and the limb nocks were not cut perfectly symmetrically. Small things, but I paid no less than anyone else.
Congrats on your new purchase and best luck shooting!
