hi all this is my first post on this site. i recently purchused my first bow and have been practiseing like mad doing ok i think. i live in the yarra valley in victoria and there are plenty of good hunting spots close to home which is great for me there are lots of good samber and fallow deer crusing about. in saying this i used to hunt these creatures with a rifle so getting them is rather easy when you can shoot them from 300 metres if you want so i decided to sell my guns and start the frustrating but hpefully ever so rewarding art of bow hunting. so if any one can give me any starting pointers i would most grateful.[/b]
Good to have you over from "the dark side" ;)
You'll find bowhunting a challenging, but very rewarding past time.
There are many very successful and knowledgeable bowhunters here who will be more that glad to help you out :P
Can't wait to see and hear of your first successes.

Hi Yarra01 those Sambar are certinally a challange with the bow.
I too gave up using a rifle many years ago.
Best of luck with your bow hunting

piggy i think i saw your name on archery talk.com i read yor post on a dingo hunt is that the same piggy. and yes those samber are certainly a challenge they were hard enough to get with a gun its going to be extremly difficult to get one with a bow o well these the thrill of the challenge. not working this week so i am going to have a fair go at them this week. hopefully cos of the smoke that has clouded the whole yarra valley because of the fires in gippsland hopefully this smoke has stuffed up there sense of smell which could maybe allow me to get a lot closer then normal.[/url]
Hello yarra01
You'll find bowhunting a challenging, but very rewarding past time.
I think you forgot that bowhunting is sometimes frustrating :)
yarra01, you will also learn new cuss words probably in several different languages and find out it is physically possible to kick yourself in the butt also. Other than that it is fun and rewarding, so welcome.
Yarra01 I have found the deer are not very concerned by the smoke and have watched mature stags and hinds walk directly into the smoke from from a burning scub that was piled up from land clearing.
I found it allowed me to get very close as they can't smell you that well with the smoke about.
Yes that was me
Good luck next week
Cheers
Paul
A just few tips to get you going and hopefully other hunters will join in.
Total camo, including face and hands, keep the wind in your face, move slowly and use your bino's, your bow should be totally silent and well tuned. Try and get as close as possible when taking a shot. Watch some of the deer hunting videos, read articles and talk to other hunters. I have got 4 species with the bow, (missing hog and sambar). Drop me a line if you wish to chat. Howie
