Hi all

Got back from hunting in a state forest on the south coast of NSW today and found some interesting stuff that I’m hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. I found three kidney shaped pieces of fur, two together and another one about 500m away on the other side of the swamp we were hunting. The two that were together were about two meters apart (I moved them closer for the pic) and there was no other fur or parts of carcasses in the areas where they were found. They are about 15x10cm (6x4”) and have a bone centre like a spine. They are about 30 cm long about 5mm along their entire length and look like a long thin tail. On one of them one end looked like it was a tail that had been ripped (not cut) off but this was not apparent on the others. The fur is very soft and while the pair were virtually odorless the third smelt similar to sheep. The forest that I was in is reputed to have just about every feral/game animal that there is in NSW. The third one was dark brown, the same as the darker one in the photo. I can answer questions if you need more info.

Can anyone suggest what they might be?

Second is a bit easier, the forest is supposed to have fallow, does this look like a fallow rub (admittedly a bit out of season)?

Maybe Cat. The State Forest may have had a baiting programe put in place to control Feral Dogs and the feral cats would certainly take a free feed.
As for the fallow rub, it does look like an old one. Cheers.

Cheers Scott

I thought it might be a cat (there is a baiting program in the forest), but the smell and the feel of it is different to the domestic cats that I have come across and that includes ones that live out bush (they weren’t mine). I can post more pics if anyone needs them just tell me what of.

what about Alpaca ?
Are there any Alpaca farms in the district ?

While I haven’t been close to an Alpaca before I would imagine that their fur would be similar to this, what are their like? Where I was hunting the closest farmland was about 5km away and I don’t know what they have on it.
