just wondering if any people on here ever go on backpacking hunts after sambar? If so what are the bear essentials? I plan to go on a few hunts this year and would also like to hear from anyone keen enough to give it a go

Hiking in is the way to go. The sambar seem less jumpy.
The fires have burnt up favorite areas also. It will be interesting to
see what is left.
Packing in is a great way to hunt Sambar, theres nothing like welcoming them hills under a heavy load.
Give it a go mate you might just like it.
Boony, why the cart, you going in for a month or something . :)

Hell it doesn’t look good out there.
Deer aside, I feel for the poor buggers protecting their homes and fighting those fires.
Maybe its time to reminess on past excursions, for the country captured in these pix will now be charcoal.

Nothing wrong with chicken pants eh Doug, especially when they are camo. (It hides the skid marks!! Sorry mate I can't let it go yet !!!)
Trust you to pipe up, Furzey 'ol mate. :D
A classic outdoors man such as your self, I would have thought you of all people would realize fine undergarments when you see them.
Thermals are the clothing of choice for the dedicated backpacker, but do you realize how hard it was to find them in camo(for the above mentioned reason of couse) :P
Here's one out of the archives Furzey!

Was it that long ago Doug! No wonder I'm getting itchy to do it again. A few of the boys are up for a ride this winter into a different spot, I'll have to let you know when ( I won't tell Crusty, he's done enough this year lucky bugger!).
Sorry steviebby
Haven't been much help.....Ok keep weight down, buy a very good waterproof sleeping bag, dried foods, water tabs but atleast 3lt clean water just incase, plenty socks, jocks up to you, and a spare of everything you think important esp batteries for radio and torch even pocket radio if going alone
But remember if the gates closed using a push bike is illegal, thats why the cart.... allows me a base camp and the ability to fly camp o'night if required.

A quality back pack wont make the load any lighter but you cant go past the comfort a good one offers.
You get what you pay for-buy the best you can afford.
Yeah gone a little of topic.
steviebby,
If you were to buy all that is required in one hit you would run your self dry, some items can be specialized like boots, packs, tents etc. I suppose it all depends on what sort of trips you plan to undertake i.e. duration and the extent you wish to walk in. ssga1 touched on some basics its a good start, initially buy and borrow what you have to so you can give it a go then take it from there. Though as previously mentioned buy the best your money will allow, it sure as hell pays in the long run. After many years we are still adjusting and modifying what goes into our packs, the shorter sambar trips have been great in experimenting with different gear in preparation for extended trips to NZ.
Dale,
It would be great to catch up again mate (krusty included, we’ll just have to add more rocks to his pack this time to keep that hunting machine at bay):D
ssga1,
Did not know push bikes were out of bounds during gate closures. I thought the law referred to motorized forms of transport. Are horse’s legal?

Dunno if they are a mode of transport that is governed to speed limits and other road rules then yes out of bounds! Why you got a horse???
Stevie, remember to look at always keeping dry once your wet it gets very uncomfortable.....

Where is it stated that pushbikes are a no go, I always thought it was acceptable as its fairly well practiced, not that means anything of course? I will admit to not having read the 'codes of conduct'. If that's the case you might find your cart applicable to the same rules. :D
Mate I would love to spend some time in the high country on horse back, but no horse means no go, will just have to rely on 'shanks pony' to get me about.
Cool pics, keep them coming. :D
