Anybody here reccomend a bow stringer for stringing longbows or is the stringer just for recurves :?

I hear that if u do the step through process limbs can get twisted and i dont want to take risk of bow being ruined. sorry bout all these questions im new to longbow dont want to wreck such an excellent piece of equipment.

thanks.

I'd be interested in people's thoughts on this too.

I can't see much risk with the fibreglass bows, but at first I also used a stringer - limb-tip style. When I started using heavier bows I started to use the step through method as it is easier for me. I also feel a bit more comfortable than having heavy bow springing towards you on a stringer, versus away from you with step through.
I know some people don't ever recommend the step through and other (including Turbow) recommend it as the preferred way. There was a thread on another site about this but I saw only "I do this and only this" style comments. And so some reasoned comments would be enlightening.

If you want to ruin a good bow especially a recurve the step through method over your bottom foot will do it every time. I use the step through method to string all of my bows but I use a dog collar around the ankle and place the recurve in the dog collar, this way you cant twist the limb, this is the method just about everybody used once, it's a real Australian way of stringing. Make sure the handle of the bow is the pivot point though and not the bottom limb as I have seen some archers do.
A good way to string a longbow is the push pull method but if it is a heavy bow or a long in length bow you can have a bit of trouble with this method but it is easy when you get the knack of doing it. The push pull method is not to be attempted with a recurve as you can loose an eye but safe with a longbow.
Get a dog collar, it's a very safe method...Glenn...
